We moved here to SC about 12 years ago from FL. Down there, we
usually had a good flow of kids come by and all was a happy event.
We were surprised that where we live now, most in our neighborhood
keep their front-door lights off on Halloween - meaning, "Don't come
here for a handout." I can understand that if you're not home, but . . .

I personally felt pretty sad that we only had about 10 or 12 youngsters
come by in about a two hour period.

In years past, the youngest would come by - usually accompanied - just
as it was starting to get dark; so I took our large bowls of candy out and
sat on our porch at about 6:15pm. A Sheriff's car drove slowly into our
neighborhood, and then on his way out, he stopped by and asked where
all the trick-or-treaters were. I brought a smile when I told him that he
was the only one I'd seen so far, and I offered some candy which he
turned down.

I sat out there for at least 1 1/2 hrs and then disappointedly went
inside. We had the doorbell ringers come by in widespread intervals,
and none of them seemed like they were having much fun. We gave
them each a handful of candy, but even that didn't seem to 'brighten
their night' as they headed back out to the roadway where adults
waited for them.

For the sixth consecutive year we had zero trick or treaters. We leave the lights on and the gate open and have candy available (just in case for the last few years.) There are a few young families in our area but they must go somewhere else. I suspect that as many in our area are "older," they find more fertile ground elsewhere.

Our doorbell rang only twice last night for a total of 6 or 7 kids. Our neighborhood is a nice, upper middle class suburb and, when we moved in nearly 40 years ago, was full of young kids, including our 3. We used to get loads of kids for Halloween. Over the years, the neighborhood's average age has changed and there are few young families here any more. I like having the kids around and I miss it. They help to keep us young.

When my son was 10 or so, he still wanted to go, but I told him people resent having 6 ft. kids, never mind their age. His buddy was small and continued year after year. So I bought candy, all assorted, and gave it to him. Problem solved. Oh, this year, NONE.

We had at least 150. We bought 300+ pieces of candy.(if you remember the scene from ET where the neighborhood was swarming with kids that about covers it)

I was pretty good about giving each kid two pieces. We ran out about 7:45. We live in a fairly affluent urban neighborhood. I watched as vans full of people I'd never seen around the neighborhood open up and spew out half a dozen kids. My theory is the parents are bringing them over here because it's a very safe area. There's little or no crime other than Amazon stuff getting stolen by the huge colony of "homeless" people taking over the city.

The kids were adorable, even the ones from outlying areas. 95% were in costumes, even the babies being carried by the parents (I still don't get that but it's probably a cultural thing - new to the US - it's California after all - sanctuary state.) My wife was flying home from Albuquerque so she missed out. Wish it was her and not me. Not that I'd want to go to Albuquerque on business. Lovely city but such a pain in the neck to get to from here. No direct flights.
