I have searched old posts and have not found anything recent. I have approx 1,000 Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides that I would like to scan or have scanned. I would like to find an automated system that I can load bulk stacks of slides and let the scanner do the initial work.
I do have an old Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED but do not have the slide attachment. I would also have to get a FireWire card to add to my Win10 computer to be able to connect it.
I am also not opposed to renting equipment, using a scanning service, but when it approaches .50 to $1 per slide, make more sense to buy or rent the gear and do it myself, provided that I can do bulk batching.
Any experienced advice is greatly appreciated.

There aren't many slide scanners that can handle bulk feeding mounted slides. Braun and Pacific Image currently offer them, but they cost $1800 and $1000, respectively (I haven't used either one, so can't comment on their quality, speed, etc.)
Your best bet would be to get the SF-200 bulk slide loader for your Nikon 4000ED and use that (there are two offered on eBay right now, tho they are rather high priced). That can accommodate up to 40 mounted slides in a batch. I have one and used it a lot in the past. Still do occasionally, though I'm not making many slides anymore... But I have some 30,000 or 40,000 slides on file
. When I scan a batch, I set it up in the evening, start it right before I go to bed and let it run overnight. It jams occasionally, but if I'm careful I'll wake up to a completed job and a hard drive full of 130MB TIFFs!
Should be no big deal getting and installing a Firewire card to be able to connect the scanner. Frys, Newegg, B&H, Adorama, Tigerdirect and others have them. I had no trouble finding and installing one in my Win 7 PC.
I suspect a bit bigger problem might be getting software to work with the 4000ED. The original Nikonscan s'ware won't work on anything later than Win XP, if memory serves.
I "cheaped out" and bought Vuescan, which works okay with my 4000ED.
A better, but considerably more expensive s'ware is Silverfast AI. There's a version of that compatible with the 4000ED.
Once done with your scanning, unless you plan to shoot more slides, you could sell off your 4000ED and bulk loader to recoup some of what you have invested.
