Even with the triangle people will still pull up on the wrong side of the pump. They either are in a hurry and go to the line that is moving the fastest or they just don't care about the triangle.

Or they haven’t seen this thread!

I worked at a full service gas station in the early seventies and a lot of Vette owners wouldn’t let me put the handle in the car. They insisted on doing it themselves, same for a lot of bikers.

As a biker, I want to control the gas nozzle so there is much less chance of spillage which might get on the tank, the seat or even drip onto the HOT engine.

It's put there to eliminate the embarrassment of pulling up to the wrong side of the pump and finding no hole to put the pump in. Apparently this info is too late for some of you.

I think that the thought process behind this triangle needs to be revisited. As a driver; and an engineer: I look at this triangle/pointer and my mind thinks that it indicates the side of the pump that I have to position the vehicle at in order to refuel.

Now you know it's not how you think.

Thinking your way, it's the side the pump should be on when you pull in.

I refueled private aircraft, always used a triple folded shop rag to protect the tank opening. Never had a complaint.

The older VW Beetles had the filler in the (front) trunk where the gas tank was. A very bad place for a gas tank if you hit something. The mid 1960s 1275 Mini Cooper S had a filler on both sides and they went into the same gas tank. A friend of mine would sometimes have the attendant put a certain number of gallons into one side and a different amount into the other side just for fun.
