I want to stay away, but it seems I am here everyday.
I am not a fan of B&W.
It's moody, check out the contrast, it sets the tone. It's so artistic.
It's B.S.
I see in color.
Everyone even me, gets lucky and can pull off a b&w shot every now and then.
There are not that many photographers, who can successfully make a living shooting only B&W.
They are not on this site.
I got banned from the street section for making comments about Voss's and other people's street photos.
To me, if you have to explain the shot it becomes a snapshot. A image should stand on it's own. The only information Ansel gave was, where the shot took place. Anything more is a postcard.
In regards to the street section
I guess out of focus images that are full of black blobs, just do not fit into my idea of a good photograph
I have not seen one shot I would hang on my wall.
There seems to be a serious lack definition between the b****s.
On Voss's post today, the guy is a blob from the waist down.
Look for yourself.
I tried to post that observation. That's when I found out I had been banned.
The guy [Alpflo?] who runs the site, apparently has issues with anyone who dares cross him.
I had commented on a post awhile back.
He told me, I didn't understand street photography.
I corrected him, and told him I did indeed understand the concept.
He then asked why I wasn't shooting street
I explained, I live in the country. There are days that go by when the only people I see are my family.
That the area I live in, does not have a main street. The only place around here, where there are people, is at the grocery store. I explained that taking shots of little old ladies pushing a shopping cart didn't spin my wheels. I guess he didn't care for that response.
I also wrote I didn't care about the rules of street photography that were from the 1950's.
Times change, we have gone away from film. Back before we had DSLR's, color was a lot more expensive. The film cost more, the chemicals and enlarger were big bucks. Any artist struggling or not, will try to save money. Drum roll please... That is why back in the good old bad days they shot in b&w.
I tried without success, to explain rules were made to be broken.
I told him more and more street photographers are shooting in color.
How else does the art of photography expand.
Art is not static. Look to see the difference between Rembrandt and Picasso.
Change is one of the most, critically important aspects of art.
The sad part is that so many are afraid of change.
It seems Alpo is one of them
As long as this is my last post before I am tossed.
Here is some free advice
You have to be on the net to get here.
Use it.
Stop asking what gear to buy
Google the lens, the camera you want to buy.
READ THE REVIEWS.
Then you can make a intelligent decision on what to buy. Nobody and I mean nobody, can make that decision but you
Quit bragging, I do not care if you are going to Timbuctoo, If you are smart enough to plan a trip, you should be smart enough to figure out what F#^$ing camera or lens to take.
Stop the bird and flower pictures. We are all proud of the shots we take. But honesty., you guys overdosed me. I don't know if I can take another picture of either of them anymore.
For all that is Holy, leave the saturation slider alone. I have seen colors in shots, that have never, ever been seen in nature. Stop it. It's seriouly annoying.
And then there is the attic. Who knew you could find N**i's on a photograhy site? This will forever baffle me.
Well its been real and sort of fun.
Adios

Stick around! Opposing points of view are healthy. From reading many posts here on UHH it seems the moderator you mentioned has had more than one 'frictional' encounter with various members. You're not alone.
PS you ARE wrong about B&W.

Well, it’s refreshing to see all the drama and hyperbole isn’t limited to Trump’s taxes or Kavanaugh’s confirmation investigation.

Color for everyone is recent in photography (late 60s). That ushered the legion of family snap-shooters (blame Kodak).

From there fewer and fewer folks shot B&W. B&W became the 'artsy' thing to do.

The advent of digital added to the legion of grim photographers then came the phone camera and then social media that t***sformed the planet into a population of exhibitionists.

Quality and knowledge in the mean time went down the drain, as everything else in many other aspect of this weird society we are seeing devolving into a massive blob no one can deal with.

The result? Who gives a rat ass of what anyone else thinks for any reason? This includes photography.

Variety in subject? Yes it is absent. That is why folks like you (and I) are getting tired of it. Still, unlike you, if I am tired of something I walk away, I do not moan and diss it, after all, as individuals we all make choices. Some like vanilla other h**e it. Who cares?

I agree with Rich... hang on for a while; a lot of what you said had a ring of t***h to it and you have to have a thick skin sometimes to even throw out a comment or post on a topic you know will not be well received here. We are all not pros and we all have our personal likes and dislikes. I personally am now starting to enjoy BW more than ever, but thats just me... Some do, some don't; some can't, some won't. Just let it flow and let it go.

Such a diatribe from a guy who has posted nothing but snapshots to the forum....

If I want to see great photography this is not the site I go too, although I have seen some here, if I want to argue politics or learn from a few of the old pros who have found a home here then this is where I come to.

There is only one point of your observation I disagree with -- That is "He must have been a real Ass Hole" -- I would modify the past tense "have been" to "he is a -----------HOLE"

Sometimes, the UHH member random outrage makes me miss the office in Corporate America before I retired. That is a DARN hard thing to do. Most of the complaints were self-generated and self-solvable. This is still a free country. We subscribe, recreate and take employment, live love and learn an a voluntary pace. We choose to participate of "lurk" in a forum voluntarily. Even the least expensive mouse has a scroll wheel.

You're confused about the place of B&W in the "Art" aspect of Photography. It wasn't the photographers who put B&W on a pedestal, it was the Art Snobs.

But, You're free to go. That's a good thing.

Bye,
C

Calling Black & White photography "B.S.", and thereby dismissing a vast portion of the best photography has produced, says a lot more about your artistic sensitivities than it does about the medium.

I wonder, in a se******n of the all-time greatest, most memorable photographs, what percentage would be color? Yes, yes, it would depend on who makes up the list. And if you are going to tell me that color would be less represented because it came along so much later, I would ask which of the iconic B&W images would have worked better in color. I suspect not many of them; you would say all of them.

Cheer up Ansel, some of us still believe you did some pretty damn good work....
