AFAIK 'D' series lenses, which have NO self-contained focus motor, will NOT auto focus on the Z6 or Z7 through the FTZ adapter. Nikon does NOT consider 'D' lenses to be current. I have a few 'D' lenses which I plan to keep as long as they are useful as I consider them some of Nikon's very best. My 105/2.8D Micro and my 180/2.8D come immediately to my mind, the latter of which is still made and sold today. Best of luck.

I have two D lenses, the 105 and 60 Micro's and do not plan to give them up. Many thanks for clearing up the D lenses.

The reason Af-d lenses do not AF on a Z-body is the camera does not have the motor and drive shaft in it. Likewise there is no extended shaft through the FTZ adaptor to link up with those lenses. All focusing is facilitated by the electronic contacts which link the electronics of the body and the lens. Just like fly-by-wire. The adaptor is just a bridge between F-mount af-s lenses and the Z body for AF to work.

All the more weaknesses inherent in these offerings. I’ve no desire to be forced to pony up my money for the latest and greatest when the camera and lenses require current technology that has so many weak points or is super costly or both...

I hear what you are saying. But, Nikon has 90+ lenses that will auto focus on the Z6 and Z7 and maintain their speed and mm. ie. My 24-70 2.8 stays a 24-70 2.8 on the Z6 and Z7. I believe that to have the D AF Nikon lenses to work the adapter would be ungainly. I am happy that all but one of my current Nikon lenses will work. My beloved 60mm 2.8 D micro has been left behind but fear not, my AF-S 105 mm Micro will work, HAPPY DAYS.

True, but they require that you buy some of them and ditch any AF-D lenses you own if you want autofocus on these cameras. I own and use 5 on my D810. If I were starting new, it would be a different story, but if I were starting new without any Nikon equipment, I'd be looking at Sony and forget these mediocre offerings.

Firstly, my question to you is about the upgrade. What is it about the D750 that is holding you back from creating superior images? What images will you be able to make with a D850 or Z7 that you can not make with a D750? If the gear is holding you back, then you upgrade. If the problem is something else, a different body won’t fix it.

That said, the D850 is compatible with about 390 Nikkor F mount lenses. Since it has an in-body focus motor, all AF lenses will work just fine and since it has an aperture feeler, all AI-s manual focus lenses will operate in manual and aperture priority modes. You may not get the best IQ of of the older lenses since they were not designed for the very high resolution of a 46mp sensor. With the FTZ adapter, the Z7 will mount all of the same lenses, but you’ll lose the metering of non-CPU lenses and autofocus capability of non-AFS lenses.

I fully agree with what you said, hence the fact that this started with "I am thinking..". My photography (as a hobbyist) is good in my eyes and many people like it, probably more than I do! those are my patients or friends etc. Now, why do it? good question, only because I can.. I have no kids and my wife works too so I can, I love photography and the issue of updating (lets not use upgrading) gives me time to get my thoughts away from my dark profession (I am a neurologist) and keep me busy pondering about "happy things" I like.

Actually I am in the same boat as you. I use photography and the related bits , like the techie stuff, etc to relax and forget about my work and other problems . Probably would get the same effect with Yoga or Pilates and it would be cheaper and better for my health but .....................

Except I do pilates too, and guess what.. at least 3-4 times a week. In reality, nothing to me and I am sure most of the folks here, comes close to photography even what you may have thought of as a teen ager during those days.. LoL

Something I just read, basically the Z7 is not quite as perfect as the D850.

I made my decision about a month before the official release of the "Z" series. I am very happy with the D850. I have old and new lenses and they all do what they always did. I am another fan of the Nikkor 105 micro. It was one of three lenses I purchased with my first Nikon body, an F100. I doubt I will ever part with it.

As for not working as well with the hi-res sensor, the biggest (non) issue is that they don't work as well as new lenses. But, I think they work as well as they ever did. The idea of the smaller pixels packed together requiring special handling may have been over played. We should have seen it in the D500.

As for mirrorless, I'll stick my big toe in with a Z6 later on, but not give up the D850.

That's an interesting question. I have a D750 and I like it a lot. I have a D850 and I think it's tops. I have a 7Z, FTZ, and the judge is still out – it's no D850. Lens-wise the D850 and 7Z - with the FTZ will accept everything I have thrown at them from the past.

I am "just" thinking about upgrading from D750 to either Z7 or D850 but a little confused about D850's compatibility with the previous Nikon lenses. What they list as "compatible" is not really all of their lenses. Has anyone
gone from D750 to D850 and used their same lenses? I have not settled yet on whether to do the move or not and if I do, which one to go to D850 or Z7. I am sure as the Z series come out in a couple of days, we will hear much more about the camera itself. Have you by any chance tried using Tamaron lenses or third party Fx lenses on the D850? Thank you

That has not been my experience. Adding a drive
shaft and motor to the converter has proved very
effective, affordable, and ergonomic. No problem.
