The Canon EOS R must be a really terrible camera

You have hit the nail on the head. There are many people on UHH who have ridiculously myopic POVs based on rather amateur and pedantic positions. The measurement of it all is a mixture of a lot of parameters that not always easily understood to the layman. I've been at this professionally at a very high level for over 35 years and the kinds of banter I hear at this site is very basic and pro/sumer based. I wish the site could be bumped up a few notches like Luminouslandscape. It would be a much better forum.
Sincerely - Chris

I have an idea. Why don't you start your own section; call it "Bump Up" or something similar to go with your oft-boasted having "been at this professionally at a very high level for over 35 years". I promise not to corrupt your section with my "basic" views. After all, I don't have an MFA in photography and 35 years professional experienced; I've just been a poor amateur peasant struggling with photography for 65+ years. Therefore I'm not worthy of being in your presence.

I think it's a good camera. It looks decent but not outstanding. I think if you want to blame it then it must be the fact that a number of photographers have lost their files due to card failure. Was it because the bad cards or because the camera? How would you know for sure which causes the lost files?

I vaguely recall the Z's have one slot or has that been totally overlooked because they are Nikon and thus can do no wrong?

I just wanted to be the first person to entertain a discussion about how terrible the new Canon EOS R is compared to Nikon, Sony and every other mirrorless camera in the world. You know it's coming, so let's jump in!

I doubt those who buy a Canon EOS R will consider it to be a terrible camera. Just because some photographers do not like it does not make it terrible. The EOS R may be a disappointment to some, but others will love it. If I were a Canon user I would be disappointed by the EOS R and Canon's philosophy: but I still would not describe it as a terrible camera. As a Sony A7III/A7II owner I really don't care what mirrorless cameras Canon and Nikon produce, as I will stick with Sony.

Canon's first EOS were the 626 and 650. All laughed.
Then the 1D came out and no real pro ever bought the antiquated Nikon screwy slowpoke system again for 30 years.
Sony still has many serious flaws that keeps them from serious pro sports etc. Also a total lack of lenses.

Dear Mr./Ms./Mrs Troll Roche,

Please stop stirring the pot. That pot can get hot and we wouldn’t want that fire underneath to singe those beautiful long locks of yours.

Well, since this thread is about the Canon EOS R, Nikon's short comings should be overlooked here. There are many threads where to discuss them, or you could start a new one.

Thank you for your well thought out and defended statement regarding the Cano...

Sorry could not continue with a straight face.

The Canon R has shows some impressive promises. True Canon did not fill it up with jazzy new stuff. But it did do things the others did not touch and most of these improve what is already a great focus system matched to not only the new lenses but with legacy lenses. Some of the legacy lenses are reported to actually perform better on the R the than on older bodies. Also, AF to F/11. Don't know why people do not make a bigger deal of that. They have incorporated eye detect in single shot, with an expectation of firmware in the near future to move it to continuous shooting. The R also accommodates APS-C lenses. This provides a clean path for APS-C to FF transition without the cost barrier that has always existed.

Canon has ALWAYS been about lenses, focus and how the bodies and lenses work as part of a larger system. The R builds on Canon's strengths. I think they have done what they needed to do to move the system forward. They are solidifying the base architecture of their line. Sony is still building. Nikon, I think, just missed the mark in terms of long term strategy. I honestly can't figure out what Nikon's game plan is.

This thread is specifically about Canon vs. all the others including Nikon.

Actually I had read it, but then my mind went back to the title.

Thanks for the correction.

Well I, for one, NEVER fail to understand and appreciate the content of a post...

You are obviously very bored today and have absolutely nothing going on in your life so you find it necessary to stir-up some negative discussion on how terrible a product is that you know nothing about. We are all so fortunate to have an “expert” like you to guide us thru our equipment purchases.

Get a life!!

A little premature knocking a product that hasn't hit the street yet. Of course folks love to jump on any negatives they can find. I'm sure Mr. Sony will be right there with the OP.

Sad state we have come to.

That is sad, Bill!
