If you watch tv, on Facebook, or Twitter you will find the answer. Tv's most popular shows are the reality shows. Judge Judy, Dr Phil as well as other shows, our President and some other politicians. Society is a reflection of our culture by our leaders. It seems that peaceful, respectful. thoughtful, and tolerance do not sell or attract attention. We have very few leaders that step forward and set and example. We just lost one man who did but was critiquized by his own party at times for not towing the party line. I get annoyed by folks in general for not use the tools and information available but to take the lazy way out. If researched and look up info you will probably learn some other facts as well. How many folks by a high priced tool and fail to learn to use it to maximum capabilities. As my grand father use to say just human nature.

Queen Victoria had it right in the 19th century. That attitude of civility and politeness continued until the last two generations. Since then, civility has eroded at an ever increasing rate and since 2017 has plummeted. I agree that TV "reality" and the anonymity of the Internet are a large part of the equation, but when a country's top leadership leads the charge into the depths of vulgarity, that cannot be excused. I have traveled in several foreign countries in the last few years and this issue seems to be for the most part an American phenomenon. People in other countries have maintained there civility although they also have TV and the Internet. The difference is their national leadership and willingness to accept differences in spite of sometimes deep division.

This really isn't about "politics", but I do agree with many of these comments.
I work with the public, and I have seen a provable, increasingly nasty attitude from people the past 2 years. Coincidence?
And then about this site, I am a fairly new member here. After only reading posts for a few weeks, I joined, and after a month or so, I posted a few items for sale.
One member here then proceeded to launch into me with snarky, nasty comments accusing me of being here to sell stuff.
Really?? This then became a string of back and forth posts that grew somewhat heated. What gives with some people?
Photography is supposed to be fun, and not a source of grumpiness.
This really isn't about "politics", but ... (show quote)

Your first paragraph just made it about politics.

Denying that it is about politics does not change the cold hard fact that recent politics has given a green light to many people to speak, write and behave in a way that was once unacceptable to society. It is obvious that UHH is not immune to those changes. UHH members will not be able to change anything if we do not first accept the facts; all the facts.

None of that has happened just recently.

I suggest you get your head out of the sand. It has been happening every day.

What I meant and I'm sure you understood is that it didn't just start happening recently. It has been happening for a long time.

People here have been complaining about the hostility of some posters for years. Many members have left because of the vicious comments made so often. I wonder why there is such nastiness and arrogance in so many posts. Yes, some people ask what others think are stupid questions. They're asking because they don't know something. Of course, they could use Google or try to find the answer in a manual, but this forum exists to discuss and answer photographic questions, so we should be open to receiving those questions. I spend quite a bit of time on other - non-photo - forums, and I have never seen anything like what we have here. If someone even hints at rude comments, others remind him to be courteous and civilized. Is there something about photography that makes people behave like this?
People here have been complaining about the hostil... (show quote)

Human nature. Nastiness is wired into many human brains. A forum like this allows nasty people to be nasty without any real consequences. If humans could all change to some other benevolent form, we wouldn't have wars or crime.. or nasty posters. It is what it is. These posters do make me angry, but I try as much as possible not to get involved. That's what they want. I won't give it to them.

Actually, no it wasn't. I was only sharing my observations in regards to increasing hostility the past couple of years; since I see it, hear it, and live it every single day. Draw your own conclusions.
So here's an example right there in your comment...a "hostile" comment within the topic of hostility.

No. It's the UHH.

It's akin to the balcony guys on the Muppets TV show...only here there are 5000 of them.

UHH has an Attic which encourages non-photographic adversarial comment and nastiness. UHH has Chit Chat, a non-photographic section. Other Forums do not have controversial sections and are monitored closely. Cambridge in Colour is one of the best behaved photo forums on the web, they do not tolerate bad manners and will quickly stamp on anyone who tries it on. Adobe member forum, Affinity user Forum - both are monitored and work well.

UHH seems to encourage controversy and retaliation.

You finished that first paragraph with “coincidence?”. That’s code for “it’s Trump’s fault”.

The Fox News/Trump supporters find "code words" in every single thing that they do not agree with. Sorry if that sounded hostile.
OK...back to photography!

No accusation of hostility. Just pointing out the politics in your post.
