One easy suggestion is not to consider Pentax. The word about the web is that Pentax is on its way out.
They have stopped innovating and relying on their existing product camera line.

The word about the web from who?

This is like asking which monitor looks best or which keyboard or mouse is best. These are all personal preferences based upon the likes of the user. What I or anyone else likes or thinks is better is really of no value in your decision with all makes and models being of reasonable features and quality. Go and try them out. See what feels comfortable. In other words, test drive them. Maybe rent the two you like best so you can see how well they perform for you.

That's easy, NC ... Asus Monitor, MS Keyboard, Logitech Mouse ...

This will be a b-day present for my lady, NC ... so, it really doesn't make any diff what feels good to me ... it's HER that counts, in that regard ...

But, you see - it's supposed to be a surprise, after all ....

There is no way that anyone can tell you which is best for you. All three that you mentioned make great beginner cameras, along with some others such as Sony. Personally I like Nikon since that's what I shoot. But a Canon shooter will prefer that brand. I suggest that you go to a retailer that is unbiased (good luck) and get a few of them in your hands. Which one feels best to you. Are the controls laid out in a format that is comfortable to you. Do you like the viewfinder. Do you like the standard lens and are there lenses available that you like and can afford. Do you plan to shoot video and if so which one is the easiest for you. And there's always the chance that you'll "get the bug" and want to upgrade in the future. Who offers the best bodies & lenses in your price range. With the quality of today's gear you can't really make a bad choice. Just find the one that YOU like the best.

The reason I didn't mention Sony, Bob ... is because Sony, technically - doesn't make any DSLRs ... only SLTs, and MILCs ....

So, to avoid any arguments such as the ones I have had, before - re: SLT or DSLR or ILC ... I decided not to even GO there ....

They do have an excellent beginner camera, it's true - in the alpha a68 ... but, it makes do with a slightly smaller LCD, so ... it's NOT in contention.

Also, this is going to be a present for my lady ... so, I want her to have the "latest and greatest" beginner DSLR, for which I have plenty of glass - dig?

Of the following models, which would you consider to be the best, overall - for a relative newbie, to photography? ... Canon EOS Rebel T7, Nikon D3400, Canon EOS Rebel SL2, or a Pentax K-70? ... Please bear in mind, relative cost, and, of course - convenience of included features. Thanks so much!

Here is a good comparison of the three best contenders according to what I've see on this thread. No opinions. As SGT. Friday used to say, "just the facts and only the facts". Good luck in your quest.

The answer here is very easy (based on features, cost, quality, reliability): the Pentax K-70.
A second choice would be the Canon SL2.
But, if you're influenced by mass-market sales volume, then go with a Canon or Nikon as a first choice.

Oh, I agree with you, Nosaj ... the K-70 is an excellent choice, and with a flip-out screen, too ... plus, it's nice and compact - good for a lady's hands ...

The Canon EOS Rebel SL2 is also a great choice ... also on the small side ... AND with a flip-out screen, that's also Touch! ... can't go wrong, huh?

Plus, you can buy it in white ... which makes it a great complement to those super-long Canon lenses ....

But, now, Nikon has just released the D3500 ... the NEWEST beginner DSLR on the scene ... so ... have to see what's in THEIR magic bottle ...

As a beginner with the camera , I always liked Canon because of the amount of information and books that I could find in the book stores. The other brands did not seem to have as much available.

Really, Wallingford? ... There are many Nikon info books available on the Net ... probably, at least one - for every Nikon ever made! ... Look harder!

my D300 has the auto sensor clean , never used it , a vacuum cleaner does the job just fine .

So, agillot ... the D300 does not clean the sensor, automatically - when you switch on, or switch off, huh?

The D3000 does ... and so does every Nikon DSLR ever made, actually - up to the D3400 ... which lacks this feature ... what a shame!!!

Unless you're referring to a battery-operated, hand-held vacuum - designed specifically FOR electronics, I'd advise keeping your house vacuum as far away from your cameras, as you possibly can ... you're talking about delicate electronics, and saving devices, which rely on lasers, and magnets, and such. Using a house vacuum anywhere NEAR a camera, could null the warranty, and will definitely MESS up - your SD cards ... please be careful!!!!

Go to a reputable dealer. Handle them all. Consider which one you like the feel of best and unless it is way out of your price range, get that one. They're all going to be good.

Burt ... the price I specified, earlier - more than which, I don't wish to spend - for a beginner camera for my lady - is $600 (prefer less, if possible) ...

Don't know about any reputable dealers around here ... they've all closed down ... leaving just Best Buy and BJ's and Costco and the like ...

I have handled some of them at Best Buy ... not the ones I've narrowed it down to, here, though ...

I appreciate your comment about them all going to be good ... I think you're right ... at least - the SL2, K-70, and D3500 ...

Just need to figure out WHICH of those three - might be the BEST - for her ....

I think that question is like asking "What's a good beginner car to learn how to drive? A Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra or Hyundai Elantra? All of them have great beginner cameras (and great advanced models as well), but the real question is whose system do you want to be married to since the lenses between those three are not interchangeable. If you can try out all three models in a store (or with the person who is considering the purchase) that would probably answer your question, as well as a review of reviews online. I am biased a bit towards Nikon but have been tempted by the offerings of Olympus M43 and Pentax's K system as well. If you go with Nikon avoid the 3400 - the 3300 or new 3500 are better - the 3400 dispensed with the sensor cleaner to reduce costs but it's an absolute necessary for an ILC. The 3xxx models have a beginner "guide" mode, as well as the more advanced PASM modes with exp comp/bracketing, so they are excellent models to start with in the Nikon family.

Chris ... what? ... no American cars, there? ... My, oh, my - what is the world coming to?

Of course, in the camera world, we are dealing with ONLY Eastern Asian product (Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Taiwan) ...

The field has already been narrowed down, somewhat - by the question ... DSLR ... NOT MILC ... so, Oly/Panny/Fuji/Sony - are all out ...

I do know about the neglect of the D3400 ... the question is - does the new D3500 follow suit, or not? ... If so - it's also out ... drop back to D3300!

Now - compared with the Nikon D3300 ... is that a better product, than the Pentax K-70 (doubt it!) or the Canon EOS Rebel SL2? ... aaaaaah ... er ....

Dixie ... I deliberately left out Sony ... as they really don't make DSLRs ... just MILCs ... oh, and a couple of SLTs ... er, I mean ILCs ...

Still trying to figure out what a zebra is - on my a77 II ... much too complicated a dig cam - for my lady ... and waaaaaaay too expensive, too ...

On the basis of my 3years experience of shooting. Of course I did study other candidates and visited local camera shops. I feel Pentax K 70 is the best value and it is not too big or heavy but built like an armored vehicle ( not a tank) Haha. Shang

Captain Al

Thanks for your input, Al ... the T6i - whilst a very capable camera ... is older technology ... 19 focus points instead of 45 - big diff! ... not full DPAF ...

The T7 ... uses the same 24MP sensor as the EOS 80D!!!! ... plus, it's a beginner ... and has all those aids focused at beginners ....

The Canon EOS Rebel SL2 ... ALSO has that same sensor, now ... PLUS the flip-out touch screen ... only thing is - it's smaller ...

... which may well be beneficial for my lady - for whom it's going to be a B-Day present ... (she didn't give ME anything for mine - naturally!) ...

I am a Pentaxian from many years experience. My personal opinion is the Pentax is less cost, has essentially the same controls and functions as canon or Nikon and has great reputation for its glass. I started my SLR photography In a rebellious manner of speaking by purchasing an off brand of camera because I didn't want the pay the higher price for the Mamiya, Nikon, Minolta or any other of the well known brands. I bought a Petri. Years later the company went out of business but the camera lasted for many years and I still have a Petri camera and accessories. However, it is not a digital so again I opted for the lesser expensive camera and went with Pentax. I've had no problems with my Pentax and I believe it provides me with the photos I want and is a very durable and easy to use. IMHO and my $0.02 worth.

And a very good two cents worth it is, PH ... I appreciate the input ... I am leaning towards the Pentax K-70, and not based on price, alone ...

Mamiya has converted, kinda ... did you know that, PH ? ... the reorganized outfit is now known as Phase One ...

Tell you a secret, PH ... the first 35mm SLR I ever bought was a Mamiya/Sekor ... then, a couple of years later, picked up an RB67, then, a Universal - both gone, now, though!

Minolta, of course (along with their adoption of Konica) went to Sony on the buy-out ... and the Sony alpha a-mount DSLRs are still Minolta mounts ....

So, if you buy any of those - a57, a58, a68, a77, a77 II, a99, a99 II - you will be able to use ANY of your old Minolta lenses on it - directly ... neat, huh?

I remember Petri ... considered a purchase, at one time ... there were so many brands, back then (in the 70s) ... weren't there? ... oh, well!!!
