Chris, just about any of them are good for beginners. The part that becomes difficult for the beginner is the additional "features", which aren't photographic per se which are included. For a beginner, all that's really needed is shutter speed, aperture, and ISO.

All respectable choices, but I think the Canon "Rebel" series cameras are a great place to start on a budget and have lots of room to learn and grow. The software they provide with the camera is also a great place to start your post production learning curve. It is very capable and not quite so overwhelming for most. To this day, I think their .JPEG editor called "Zoombrower" is about as good as it gets for editing .JPEGS and although the RAW editor is somewhat basic, it is also quite capable and easy to use. I still use my T1i as my backup camera and for Macro shooting since I have a nice Macro lens for it. Frankly, that camera taught me a lot and was a good choice for me when I started into Digital Photography. When I finally decided to upgrade, I ended up with a used Pentax K3 and found it to be a great value for the bucks and a good choice for an upgrade on a budget. However, the Canon T6i was in the running down to the very last and I still think that I would have been quite pleased with it had I gone that way on the upgrade.

Thanks, Bud ... I am completely in agreement with you ... it's hard to beat the Canon offerings ... I think it may well be the SL2 ... but, am still considering the Nikon and Pentax offerings - in the same price range ... I had a K-3 for a while ... sent it back ... its replacement was the D7100 ....
all about what was available at the time at my price point ... don't get me wrong ... the K-3 is a wonderful camera ... still considering the newer K-3 II ...

On those Canon software titles included on CDs in the package ... yes, they are easy to use, and very much - all-encompassing ... but, when I upgraded two of my PCs to Win 10 ... they were all removed in the process ... never reloaded them, since .... let Windows do photo management, now ...

Don't believe everything you read on the internet. They have been around a long time and I bet many more years. If they stopped making cameras today the ones I have will last me many years. My old film cameras are still clicking and have not been made in many years. Pentax is just not a cookie cutter camera maker.

My first & only DSLR camera was the Nikon 5300 and I love it. I waited until Midwest Camera in Columbus had them on sale & went to get it. I'm just an amateur and so don't need all the bells & whistles. I started out with the 18-55 kit lens and have added the Sigma 10-20mm and the Tamron 18-400mm lenses. I love the ease of use of the Nikon and the quality of the pictures I get (have won multiple 1st places with photos in the county fairs).

Don't need all the bells and whistles, huh, Marcia? ... The D5300 has a GPS!!! ... The only low-priced Nikon DSLR to have one!!!!

Oh, maybe you meant the Touch-Screen, huh? ... Which came in the later D5500 ... ?

Or had you meant the flip-out 3.2" screen ... they both sport?

Plenty of bells and whistles ... I'd say ... I agree with you ... love my D5300 ... it's my first Go-To Nikon, in fact ...

Congratulations on your wins with the Nikon D5300 and Sigma lenses ... oh, btw ... I ONLY use Sigma lenses on my Nikons ....

Thanks, Nikon ... I've already discovered that ... bought my Canon EOS Rebel T3 in 2011 ... a year later bought my D3200 - doubling my res!!!!

Ten more DSLRs later, and am still looking for the perfect one for ME ... however, this is for a friend ... considering the D3500, now .... thanks!!!!

I am a 2 year newbie, and my choice for my first DSLR, after much research, was the Nikon D3300, for a number of reasons, good reputation, produced good images, easy to learn, not complicated, etc. Now my Grandson bought the Nikon D3400 just 6 months ago, and has had good success with that Nikon model. So, it comes down to personal choice, but do your research first, you will be offered many, many opinions, both positive and negative concerning different Camera models, but YOU must decide in the end. Hope you find the Camera that will help you to love Photography.

Also, check out Refurbished Cameras too, save quite a bit of money, as you learn, then move up to a more advanced model.

Yes, Silverman ... have discovered that, already ... even have a few votes here on Olympus - who doesn't make DSLRs ... one on a Sony MILC, too ...

The D3300 is an excellent choice for a beginner camera (mine was the prior D3200) ... and the D3400 is okay ... but has no Auto-Sensor Cleaner ...

Am still trying to figure out if Nikon put it back, in the new D3500 ... hope they did ... if so, that just might be the one ...

Refurbs are an excellent compromise between new and used ... been burnt twice now on used cams ... not so, on the one Refurb I've purchased ....

Thanks for your suggestions on that ... this will be for a special friend, though ... I will be buying it new ...

Thanks, RKL ... a great tip! ... If it feels good in MY hands, it'll feel good in HERS, too, huh?

I do buy what feels good in my hands - for ME ... but, what feels good to the lady I'm buying it for - may be something else ... yaknow?

Which includes the Medium-Format 645D and 645Z, the full-frame K-1 and K-1 II, the APS-C KP, K-3 / K-3 II and the K-30 / K-50 / K-70 ...

And the K-S1 and K-S2 ... not to mention their excellent Q entries into the Mirror-less world ... PLUS all their various compacts ....

A pretty good line, overall - I'd say, Warren ... hard to believe they'd give up on ALL of them ...

Don't believe EVERYTHING you hear on the grapevine!!!!

Ricoh has a lot of money invested in their Pentax division ....

What about the Canon SL-1 and SL-2 option, might fit her very well. The new Fuji cameras are also very interesting.

Yes, I think you're right, Mikey ... in fact, if I go the Canon route, I suspect it WILL be the newer SL2 - which I can buy in white - she'll like that!

Thanks, Mikey ...

On the Fuji line ... they have some wonderful dig cams, to be sure, but there are no DSLRs ... they are all MILCs, now ....

Besides, this is for a friend, and I have considerable money invested in Canon, Nikon and Pentax glass ... which she may use, if she wishes ...

And, of course - that points out the need for fresh glass - for Oly/Panny/Fuji ... not about to do that ...

Pentax K-70. An overlooked but decent camera for a decent price. Period!

Oh, yes, I agree with you, Rob ... the K-70 is a helluva camera ... and not too big, either ... may be just perfect for her hands ...

And, at $598 ... the price is right ... and, I even have a DA WR lens she could use on it - a 50-200mm ...

In fact, I seem to be going in that direction ... anyway - between that one, the Canon EOS Rebel SL2 and the new Nikon D3500 ...

Thanks for the input, Rob ....

I have not read the seven pages of responses in this thread and I hope someone has already brought this point up, do any of your friends or family members have Nikon, Canon or Pentax equipment? If so, select that brand of camera if they have lens or accessories that you could try out before you buy. Another reason to pick that brand would be if you have questions they might be able to answer. If no one close has equipment that you can borrow, just consider yourself the leader of the pack and find the camera that works and feels best for you. Rent each one of your selections for a week. They are all good starter cameras.

Regardless of brand, the FIRST THING to check is if the camera fits your hands....you can get a good steady grip, you can hold it comfortably, reach controls with fingers easily.

I was all set to buy a Canon Rebel a few years ago, because I did not need anything on my camera that a Rebel did not have. But when I tried one in the store, I found it to be too small for me to hold well and comfortably. The equivalent Nikons are also smaller bodies than higher models. I had to move up to a Canon 60D, for $500.00 more, to get good hand fit.

Of course, a Rebel with a battery grip will give more of a hand-hold, besides all the other benefits of the battery grip.

Oh, yes ... I agree with you, Nadele ... having a good fit to your camera is paramount ...

I was very pleased with the fit of my first dig cam - a Canon EOS Rebel T3, but, then, found, later - I liked the fit of the T4i a little better ...

At the same time as THAT purchase, I also bought the EOS 60D - to see if I'd find THAT one to be more comfortable ... but, I didn't ...

In fact, I found the Canon EOS 60D to be too large, and unwieldy - for me ... which is why I've never ventured into Full-Frame ...

That experience has made me realize - the 60D - perhaps, the largest APS-C DSLR ever made ... was way TOO big, for my hands ...

The next camera I purchased, with which I felt very comfortable - was the Nikon D5300 ... followed, closely - by the Pentax K-50 ....

All of the others I've bought, either, turned out to be too big - the D7000, especially ... or, too small - the D5500 ...

Which, perhaps - explains why I've never ventured into Micro Four Thirds MILCs ... or, in fact - ANY MILCs ... I'm a DSLR man - tried and true!

Love Nikons. The a6000 seemed small but has that comfortable feeling even with one hand.
If you want a step up the 6300 is really impressive. Great IQ and 4K. Great video. Only missing
Stabilizing most lens for these cameras have it. Just my experience with them. Good luck.

Me, too, Tom ... so much so, I now have FIVE of 'em ... more than any other brand, I have, in fact ...

Sorry, Tom ... but I don't see the Sony 6000 series as a step up ... first off, they're not DSLRs ... they're MILCs ...

And the frame is all the same - on the entire series - 6000, 6300, 6500 ... all the same, but the 6500 does have a touch-screen - a plus ...

I held a 6000 at the park last summer ... even held it to my eye ... very disconcerting to be seeing off to the left of the lens - I'll tell ya ...

When I hold up any of my Sony SLTs to my eye - even though it's an EVF I'm seeing ... at least, it's going in the right direction ...

Dogs ... this is for a special friend ... want her to have the latest and greatest in an affordable DSLR ... the a6000 is NOT a DSLR ... it's an MILC!

Besides, I have no E lenses ... only A lenses, and they won't fit on an a6000 ... has to be Nikon, Canon, Pentax or Sony A-Mount (a68) ....
