Mark: That has to be very disappointing. Hope you took the time to enjoy the sights as you were snapping away...at least you have the images in your head. I went out to birdwatch and take photos Sunday morning. When I got to the wildlife preserve and started checking my settings, I noticed the setting showing the number of shots left on the card read "E"...which means the card slots were "E"mpty. Still did my birdwatching, and on this day there wasn't much to see, but I know how easy it is to forget that you took the memory carry out to download photos, etc. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

I don't get it. My Pentax camera bodies indicate when there is no card inserted or the card is not making proper contact. And depending on which camera (model) and what mode I'm shooting in, the shutter release is inactivated when there is no card. There might be a reason I have not tried a Sony Camera yet. Old film Minoltas were great.

Though, I'll have to admit I once went to a Photo Class when we were to do some studio shots and I found that I had forgotten to put a card back in my camera. Luckily a friend let me borrow a spare card he had. I think the process was a bit complicated though As he had to copy his files from one card to another because he has a Nikon and I had to format his card to use it. Luckily he had either a two slot camera or we used the card readers on a computer first to transfer his files. I forget now.

At least you had someone there to share the memories with.

Does no one read anyone else's posts?

As I said earlier in this thread, I checked my Sony RX10 iv and found that the default is to:

1 - display a FLASHING "NO CARD"

and if you try to take a photo anyway,

2 - to not let you do so, but instead fills the screen with a msg, CANNOT OPEN THE SHUTTER SINCE THE MEMORY CARD IS NOT INSERTED.

The fault, dear Reader, is not in our Sony,
But in ourselves.

Yes, I read your post. And I read Mark's, as well as several others that supported the idea that this is not the default setting. I don't have a Sony and my inclination is to give the OP the benefit of the doubt and show a little sympathy. Others seem to prefer to pile on.

BTDT, now, one of the first things I do in initial set-up is to disallow the shutter if not card is inserted.

Sounds to me like your experience simply gives you a great excuse to go back there!

Seems to me that after the first time, one would double and tripe check. But that is just me

Hard to believe a company would release a camera that didn't default to, "No Card In Slot".

I've posted a few images and comments about my Sony RX 10 IV. I have so much to learn about the camera.
OK, how many of your would admit to these f--- ups?
1. Took 200 images in Prague, in extremely hot weather (90+ degrees), and discover I had no card inserted. BTW: they were wonderful images.
2. Took about the same number of images in Vienna and discovered no card in the camera.
3. My wife was sick in Budapest so we spent a day in the hotel room. No images.
4. We had one more day after our tour ended (today). Hired a private driver and guide to take us around the city, specifically for photo scenes and vantage viewpoints. He was terrific and added history of the country as we drove from site to site. Fabulous sites!!! Fabulous images!! Get back to hotel, paid him $180 & a $40 gratuity for three hours. Could not wait to get back to hotel room to review the images. Guess what? No images!! For the 3rd time, NO Card!!
I could not understand why I did not receive a "no card" warning and how the camera took images without a card. Took out the book (Alexander White) and discoverd I had not enabled the feature in the voluminous menu. DUH!! DUH!!. My father, only in jest, used to day to me, "you're getting dumber by the day"! He was right

No lectures please or how to prevent such mistakes. I've been whipped enough.

I'll soon recover and forgive myself.
Mark
I've posted a few images and comments about my Son... (show quote)

While you think you have been 'whipped enough' I feel the need to jump in. If as you say, this happened once in a situation where it would be impossible to find the same photo opportunities, it would behoove you to, as a matter of course, to check your card slot each time you start out the day. I've not been in your exact situation, but I have been in a similar situation, finding that images I thought that I had didn't exist upon CHECKING. Fortunately, I was. near a retail store and was able to get a card and go back and duplicate the shots (8 or so), and continue on with my day. Keep in mind that these where images for a client!

Sorry to hear!
Just to make you feel perhaps better, Mark, let me tell you that I made about twenty shots of my friends I have not seen for so many years in a historic restaurant (a few weeks ago in Prague) and all images came out so badly out of focus, that I can't use them.
I didn't put my reading glasses on when setting up my camera, because I thought I can do simple pictures without them!
Duh, duh, too!
Maybe, we will have to make another trip, there?

No quite, but almost, wants to make me think about film again!
BTW, I think Sony should be A LOT smarter than to NOT MAKE the "no memory card" alert a default condition that you have to turn on! Clearly, Pros might feel insulted if they got the alert automatically but the rest of the world sure would appreciate the warning!
