OK, how many of your would admit to these f--- ups?
1. Took 200 images in Prague, in extremely hot weather (90+ degrees), and discover I had no card inserted. BTW: they were wonderful images.
2. Took about the same number of images in Vienna and discovered no card in the camera.
3. My wife was sick in Budapest so we spent a day in the hotel room. No images.
4. We had one more day after our tour ended (today). Hired a private driver and guide to take us around the city, specifically for photo scenes and vantage viewpoints. He was terrific and added history of the country as we drove from site to site. Fabulous sites!!! Fabulous images!! Get back to hotel, paid him $180 & a $40 gratuity for three hours. Could not wait to get back to hotel room to review the images. Guess what? No images!! For the 3rd time, NO Card!!

I could not understand why I did not receive a "no card" warning and how the camera took images without a card. Took out the book (Alexander White) and discoverd I had not enabled the feature in the voluminous menu. DUH!! DUH!!. My father, only in jest, used to day to me, "you're getting dumber by the day"! He was right!!

No lectures please or how to prevent such mistakes. I've been whipped enough.

I'll soon recover and forgive myself.

I’m sorry to hear that, but hope your wife is well, and your mental memory card is full. You will just have to go back and try again. I have a D500 I will have to check that it has a no card indicator and turn it on.

The first time I saw the menu option to enable shutter release w/o memory card inserted... I thought to myself "self, you need to be protected from yourself and the agonizing heartbreak that comes from the realization of the uncaptured perfect picture you will ever take."

I feel your pain... that happened to me once, not 3 times.

I'm dumber than you Mark and I can prove it ! What I'm about to recount I thought I had sent a few hours ago, HOWEVER I failed to hit "send". Faux pas number 1. A few weeks ago at my granddaughter's 5th birthday party at our local indoor pool I was photographing her and 15 of her closest friends. I had the big gun out...the D610 with my MB-D14, 28-300. I'm walking around taking pic after pic before the admiring eyes of the parents who thought that I must be really good with this spectacular outfit. I put it down to play with my granddaughter and when I picked it back up to take the all important pics of all the kids around the birthday cake the camera WOULDN'T FOCUS. I turned beet red. Parents were asking for pics of their kids. I told them it was the MB-D14, I just got it, it was malfunctioning. I know, I know, it wouldn't affect the focus, but nobody questioned it. When I sat it down I had inadvertently flicked the body AF switch to M. One of the moms took over with her %^&$*& smart phone. They all know I'm 70 and that "those" things happen. After all there is only one perfect being and right now she's in the living room watching HGTV.

Thanks for the helpful reminder, however painful. I'm sure half the Hoggers on this thread are pulling out their cameras to double-check their card-alert settings.

My usual stunt is to use the timer . . . and the next day miss a great shot by 2 seconds. At the least it's embarrassing, as you inadvertently get a selfie with a frowned look as you study the camera to figure out why it didn't fire.

Water under the bridge. Hey, an excuse to go back and do it again.

I wonder if you checked the outcome of each picture taken?
If there were no card, no image would show. I think some camera let you shoot a few and use its internal memory so as to test out the camera without a card.
I hope you still have your memory.
You may download some from the web and keep them as your own.

Even the darkest cloud has a silver lining. Now you have an excuse to revisit these cities. I highly recommend you go in mid to late September, usually cooler weather and smaller crowds. Now that you know the "lay of the land" in these cities you can do them at your leisure.

There are days and there are days. You had some days. Hopefully this will never happen again. But you are lucky, nothing happened to you or your bride and you will live another day for another trip in the future. Be safe.

Yes, I do chimp frequently. Since I had not enabled "no shooting without a card", I had no way of knowing there was not a card inserted. Some have responded with criticizing Sony for the default to allow shooting. I disagree. I take full responsibility for not knowing that. It's in the manual and supplementary books I had purchased.
Thanks for the response. We may return some day.

Thank you all for your compassion, wonderful suggestions and similar anecdotes of personal "dumb" experiences. I do have the memories and I did manage to capture many good images. My wife fully recovered. We arrived home safely yesterday afternoon after 18 hours of travel time. On our last evening we had a marvelous dinner at Aszu restaurant in Budapest, where a trio consisting of a young violinist, father and uncle performed during our dinner. Great food, great ambiance! The trip was a fabulous experience and we are very thankful our dream of 42 years came to fruition.
Cheers without regrets!

How unfortunate, I totally empathize. I did this one time also and resolved to do this: I set the camera to lock. Then, a few weeks later, I grabbed the camera, left the house, and when I saw that perfect image, went to shoot, and ..... NO CARD.

So this is what I do, EVERY time I take a card out of the camera, I put a second card in directly. EVERY TIME. One card out, the other card in. When I charge my battery, I run the wrist strap around the drawer handle under the charger and have to physically detach it from the drawer to remind me that there is no battery in the camera.

We have all either been there, or will be there.

An old photographer I knew told me once (this about film cameras).

"Did you ever open the back of your camera when there was film loaded in it? Did you feel stupid? But did you close the back as fast as you could? Now do you feel real stupid trying to close the film back before the film was exposed? Now THAT was stupid"

So did you learn anything? If yes, then it was not a total waste.
