I have done the same in the past. I would not be surprised to learn that others have also done so.

Cheers. Dale

OK, how many of your would admit to these f--- ups?
1. Took 200 images in Prague, in extremely hot weather (90+ degrees), and discover I had no card inserted. BTW: they were wonderful images.
2. Took about the same number of images in Vienna and discovered no card in the camera.
3. My wife was sick in Budapest so we spent a day in the hotel room. No images.
4. We had one more day after our tour ended (today). Hired a private driver and guide to take us around the city, specifically for photo scenes and vantage viewpoints. He was terrific and added history of the country as we drove from site to site. Fabulous sites!!! Fabulous images!! Get back to hotel, paid him $180 & a $40 gratuity for three hours. Could not wait to get back to hotel room to review the images. Guess what? No images!! For the 3rd time, NO Card!!

I could not understand why I did not receive a "no card" warning and how the camera took images without a card. Took out the book (Alexander White) and discoverd I had not enabled the feature in the voluminous menu. DUH!! DUH!!. My father, only in jest, used to day to me, "you're getting dumber by the day"! He was right!!

No lectures please or how to prevent such mistakes. I've been whipped enough.

I'll soon recover and forgive myself.
Mark

You still have the memories and a lot of practice if you should see the sights again. Who knows; maybe the shot you would have made without the chip would have been so-so compared to the one you will make. Still disappointing but at least you were there and learned about what you would have shot.

So Sorry Mark - I feel for you. I'm paranoid about this and before venturing out with my camera, I check loads of times to make sure I've got cards/batteries etc. Years ago during film days, I was on a Nile cruise. I got up before sunrise one day and went on deck waiting for the sun to rise. Happily taking photos and finished a whole film of 36. I quickly went to rewind it to change and to my horror discovered that I hadn't attached the film properly and didn' take one single shot. As it was the last day of the cruise, I never had the opportunity to do it again. I was devastated and vowed will do another cruise one day.
40 years later and still haven't managed to go...Grace

I think that after the first "no card" message, I would have found the card and put it in the camera. Batteries work the same way they run down half way through the shoot.

Oh and just remembered...one other stupid thing I did last November, after my Costa Rica holiday. I downloaded photos from one SD card and forgot to download the pics from second card and formatted the card. I managed to retrieve a few using Recuva but lost many...annoying that these things happen after or during a holiday....

that has happened to all of us. I am saddened by the fact that your once in a lifetime images were lost to the no card in camera gods.

Congratulations on having the courage to admit to this. We have all been there in one way or another. Keep shooting, even with a card if you want.

Oh no, Mark. So sorry that happened. This sort of catastrophe speaks to the point that occasionally "chimping" isn't a bad thing after all. Sorry also that we won't get to see some of those memorable images you almost captured.

Yes, mistakes can cause much more than forgetting to insert a card!! Enjoyed reviewing the Challlenger accident. Thanks

I've used more than one digital camera (including my Canon 60D) that could be set to disable the shutter if there is no memory card present. Not an option on your camera?

So sorry this happened. The memories will have to suffice for this trip. I hope many more are to come!

However, I do think this is a basic "safety" feature that every camera should include as a default, rather than hidden away in the middle of a hundred page or more manual. Poor design on their part even more than a mistake on yours.

Andy

Does no one read anyone else's posts?

As I said earlier in this thread, I checked my Sony RX10 iv and found that the default is to:

1 - display a FLASHING "NO CARD"

and if you try to take a photo anyway,

2 - to not let you do so, but instead fills the screen with a msg, CANNOT OPEN THE SHUTTER SINCE THE MEMORY CARD IS NOT INSERTED.

The fault, dear Reader, is not in our Sony,
But in ourselves.
