I like the Canon S110 - does really nice closeups when shooting wide open on AP

A truly pocketable camera is the older Canon Powershot Elph 330 HS. So small and yet the image quality is unbelievable for a small camera. In it's day it always received rave reviews. I recently bought a second one on eBay for $85 to keep in case my current one dies. I keep mine in the car and it has frequently be a god-send. Love it.

You might consider the "Panasonic Lumix" brand. Many P&S pocket size models, and larger models. Very excellent images produced by this Panasonic Lumix brand cameras.

Best pocket camera out there is your cell phone.

I think that this is only partly true. Cell phones have already killed the lower segment of consumer cameras. Camera makers have responded by creating high-end point-and-shoots, typically with one-inch sensors. Sony and Panasonic have excelled in this segment. Some of these cameras also have a long telephoto range, another area where cell phones cannot compete. Canon also has come up with high-end pocket-size cameras, the G7X and G9X. I personally own the G9X which I often carry as a second camera (it easily fits into my pants or shirt pocket). It has excellent image quality, although its zoom range is not exciting. Also consider that a top of the line smart phone is close to $1,000. You get a superior camera for that kind or money.

you may wish to consider the Sony Cyber Shot RX 100 line. In anticipation of a European trip after considerable research, I settled on the RX 100 iii as a backup to my Canon EOS 80 D

One of my cameras is a Nikon Coolpix S9900. It's almost a pocket camera. It's small, and nearly full featured and takes excellent photographs if I do my part. It's almost good at macros, too. It's 4-1/2"x3"x1-1/2" and has a built in flash. It's also wireless. The feature I don't like about it is that it's rechargeable by USB... no replaceable batteries.

Ditto to all!

I use the Canon SX280 HS, 40x zoom, GPS, smaller than a pack of cigarettes. I use it for real estate photography, my side job, and always have it with me for personal photos.
This is an older camera, I believe they sell for about 140 refurbished. I would buy again, or get a similar upgrade if I ever need to. Get extra third party batteries, they are actually better than Canon batteries.

Just a slight correction - the Canon SX280 is a 20X not 40X zoom.

My priorities in looking for a pocket camera are these: #1. Do you want it to fit into a pocket or do you simply want something relatively small? #2. At least a 1" sensor. #3. Zoom range you will want/need. That done, Canon, Panasonic and Sony are my brand choices. Which to get depends on price and features and ergonomics/ease of use and, if you have a preference, the brand. Many of the recommendations have limited zoom such as 24-70mm. Is this enough for you? There are similar-sized cameras with 24 to 100mm, 24-200mm, 24-250mm and 24-350mm
