Brent, I like the first one a smidge better than the second. The way the light is striking the mountains draws my eye through the whole photo.

WOW Brent. Both are excellent. I'm going with the first one.
I prefer the second one - the dramatic sky is emphasized by the simplicity of the foreground.
I go with #1 also. Very appealing.
And not a surfer in sight! You did a great job with the dramatic lighting. Picking a "preferred" isn't easy. Some judges might be fooled like Jeff was about the "horizon." Lake shores rarely run in straight lines. I would choose No.1 because the spot lighting on the distant hills gives it more of a sense of having a "subject of interest."
Personally, I think there's too much happening in number 1 and would agree with the suggestion to crop some of the sky. I'd pick #2 because there's something on which the eye can focus. Inotherwords, a subject. Not to mention depth.
I serve as a judge for several photo clubs in my area. The eye of the viewer is drawn to light and bright. Therefore I would choose #1 but I would crop off about 2/3 of the sky. Your eye is drawn to the light on the mountains and the large amount of sky above allows the eye to wander around. The crop would force the eye back to the mountains which are a strong center of interest. In the second photo, the light and bright spot is the boulder in the foreground which is not a strong subject, it is just a rock.
Go with the first shot.

I like the first one. The second one is beautiful but I have seen many photos like it. The first is "exceptional."

both are beautiful, but I favor the first shot.
Difficult choice, both have a lot going for them. A previous comment about the distant shore in #2 not being level rings true and there is also a small object that may be a boat or a rock, but if it were my photo that would disappear. That said, I would probably select #1, it's a beautiful, dramatic photo.
I'd go with the first one. The rock in the foreground in the second picture adds depth but my eye keeps being drawn to it and that's not the important element of the picture.
