I am searching for suggestions on techniques and gear for stabilizing your camera in an automobile. I want to use it in inclement weather to photograph lightning. So a window glass mount would have the camera in the rain and wouldn't work.

What is the vehicle and are you willing to drill holes in it? What is the camera? Are you going to shoot through a closed window?

You want to shoot lighting from a moving vehicle?

Might there be something with sturdy suction cups.

Of course, there are latterly hundreds of sturdy car mounts, using suction cups (from cheap to many thousands in $$)!
I rather be standing somewhere and have my camera sitting on a sturdy tripod and take shots of lighting, that way one can have good foreground elements in the composition as well!

What about protecting your camera with a rain jacket in inclement weather and shooting through an open/partially open window?

This is going to cause you some talks with the local police before you photograph anything or anyone. More so due to the recent events of terrorism. The police may confuse a camera hiding place with a gun emplacement. Anything you may concoct could be misinterpreted as a possible illegal perch for weapons due to the fact that an officer in the rain may not fully be able to view you and your camera and the lens may appear to the officer as a telescopic sight. You need to understand this before you do more than shoot through the glass window of your vehicle. If your windows have any tint at all I already know it is impossible to see inside a vehicle at night or daytime sometimes. I tell you this because years ago i was part of the law enforcement community as Federal Police.

Would you be willing to have the camera and lens in the car but have the window open? If this would be okay, drop me a PM and I’ll send you images of a devise I made to do exactly what you’re doing.

It is a Toyota 4 runner. I do not want to drill into the vehicle. I want to shoot through an open window.

Post some pictures of your invention here for the rest of us. Three or four from different angles would suit.
