I am searching for suggestions on techniques and gear for stabilizing your camera in an automobile. I want to use it in inclement weather to photograph lightning. So a window glass mount would have the camera in the rain and wouldn't work.

Ed, wow, I hadn’t thought of these for 30 years!
I once had a van I used to camp in. I had cut 3/4” plywood inserts that set into the window holes with the windows rolled all the way down. A 1/4” groove on the bottom and a 1/4” tongue on top so I could roll the window up to lock them into place.
The frames were only about 1 1/2” side. Mine had screen stapled onto them for mosquitos .
You could afix a plastic to the top and sides to stick out about 18” deep tapering back on the sides, like a giant 3 sided Lens hood.
On the bottom you screw in a 1/4x20 hanger bolt on which to mount a ball head.
Use a soft material like a good quality windshield sun reflector for the hood. Cheap and available in big pieces! Just a thought!! Good luck
