I m sorry the title was Lens help. I have several tripods. 3 speed lights several soft boxes and umbrellas with stands. Backdrops, bags for many different situations including back packs sling bags and shoulder bags. Straps galore invested in trying to find the “right” one until finally settling on my favorite a simple wrist strap. And of course tons of cards. Someday I may have interest in reach of 500-600 but I shoot a lot of College Hockey and that is just too much reach. I prefer to shoot from Ice level not high in the stands. I have good access to sidelines for college lacrosse while that reach would be great I can get away with out it. So all that being said an 80-200 or 70-200 would have the most utility between sports, portraits, and the street. Even though I already have those focal lengths covered I would like something that focuses faster and locks better than the 55-300 and of course is sharper.

I saw the title was "Lens Help", and that you are currently suffering a GAS attack. Since I could not know the level of your experience, other then you joined the hog in 2012, I was only offering what at the time I considered reasonable advice. Obviously you are heavy into our hobby/passion and are asking for a higher level of advice , of which our fellow HOGS have offered, then I thought, my apologies.

I have a 70-300mm nikon zoom that was fairly inexpensive since I got it refurbished from Nikon. It is not great on a full frame camera but it works very well and focuses very quickly with my older Nikon D7000 crop sensor.

I have GAS. Here are the parameters. I have $800 to spend no more. I have a Nikon D7100 with the following glass. 18-55 and 55-300 kit lenses, 35,50 and 85 mm 1.8 primes. I like to shoot sports, hockey and lacrosse as well as Street and portraits. I would love a 70-200 2.8. But with 2 in college I can not justify spending more than $800 right now. I am not opposed to refurb or used. The kit lenses are what they are, I love my primes because I think each one is a great value for the money. So I am looking for a lens that is a good value. Suggestions? Any ideas on great values in that price range? Thank you

Two more considerations :

Sigma 50-150 f2.8 II - very light and compact

Sigma 100-300 f4 - not light or compact - about $500 used for either - no VR on either.

Interesting. What would the 50-150 give me for less money vs the 80-200 2.8 D? Would it just be size? I know nothing about either lens.

I believe they are both HSM - NOT screw drive as the 80-200 D. The 50-150 II as I said is very compact and easy to handle and could be used with TC's if needed - but it has no tripod collar.

Yes, both HSM focus ( hyper sonic motor) - and then the question of durability comes up - as the screw drive is VERY durable - but not as FAST.

I have shot professionally for 30 years and have only purchased one new lens in my life, then I discovered KEH in Atlanta. Awesome service, good people, conservative grading and just a great experience. I highly recommend them for used gear. You should be able to get a 70-200 F2.8 for that price range. Good luck and let us know what you get!
