I have GAS. Here are the parameters. I have $800 to spend no more. I have a Nikon D7100 with the following glass. 18-55 and 55-300 kit lenses, 35,50 and 85 mm 1.8 primes. I like to shoot sports, hockey and lacrosse as well as Street and portraits. I would love a 70-200 2.8. But with 2 in college I can not justify spending more than $800 right now. I am not opposed to refurb or used. The kit lenses are what they are, I love my primes because I think each one is a great value for the money. So I am looking for a lens that is a good value. Suggestions? Any ideas on great values in that price range? Thank you

Buy a Nikon 80-200 F2.8 AF-D. Used they are around $500 - and much better than anything you will get new within your budget.

I second, they range from 500 to 750 or so used. Within your budget, I got one for around 700 in great condition. They're all metal construction, built like a tank. Not super fast in the auto focus department compared to the latest crop of lenses as they're screw drive but, fast enough. Image quality, color and contrast are great, and they are really sharp. They are still a current production lens, new from Nikon/Nikkor 1,250 +/-.

Wait. Save the $800.00 and put it toward the 70-200 later. That is the lens you need.

There is a couple of reasons that is not an option the first as I stated 2 kids in college
Second I feel I am still learning and want to focus (no pun intended) on improving skills to get better images not using using the latest and greatest to get it done. I like creating the “art”. And I like doing it with good tools that are a good value. I use a D7100 that I bought refurb for $600 pretty hard to beat that body at that price. I know it is old and has its limitations. But sometimes limitations force you to improve skill and it produces very good images. I really like it when more experienced photographers appreciate my images then are floored with the equipment I used to produce them. But the biggest reason is I am cheap. I admit it.

So it sounds like the 80-200 af d used is a good buy. Next question is where is a good place to find one used that can be trusted? I am not sure I know enough about lenses to go the eBay route. Adorama? B&H? Any others?

Nikon has a very good 28 - 300 f3.5 that can be had for reasonable amount. It is a great walk around lens and the focal length is useful for all kinds of shooting. I purchased one used from B&H several years ago for around 900 dollars they may be less these days. Something to consider, wide angle to telephoto all in one lens.

The following listing from Ebay is for a Nikon 200-500 f5.6 and is currently under your budget. The bidding is up in four hours. Good luck. It would be an ideal lens for what you are looking for. Suggestion, if you are interested do not bid until their is 10 seconds left and enter the maximum amount you are willing to spend.

www.keh.com. I've gotten a series of different lenses over the years there. If you get Excellent or Excellent Plus from them I defy you to tell it from new. Also refurbs from Nikon or through Amazon or other authorized resellers like cameta.com. Good luck!

You did mention if you currently have any accessories. For now you have a decent compliment of lenses, you only seem to lack a long telephoto, one that reaches to 500 or 600 mm. Have you considered investing in a good quality tripod, a better flash unit then the on camera one. There are many accessories for your camera that would good investments, remote shutter release, a few extra SD cards and so on. Do you have a decent bag, or backpack for your current kit, lots of ways to spend that $800.00.

Great idea. Sometimes it is better to just save until you have enough.
