You did mention if you currently have any accessories. For now you have a decent compliment of lenses, you only seem to lack a long telephoto, one that reaches to 500 or 600 mm. Have you considered investing in a good quality tripod, a better flash unit then the on camera one. There are many accessories for your camera that would good investments, remote shutter release, a few extra SD cards and so on. Do you have a decent bag, or backpack for your current kit, lots of ways to spend that $800.00.

I m sorry the title was Lens help. I have several tripods. 3 speed lights several soft boxes and umbrellas with stands. Backdrops, bags for many different situations including back packs sling bags and shoulder bags. Straps galore invested in trying to find the “right” one until finally settling on my favorite a simple wrist strap. And of course tons of cards. Someday I may have interest in reach of 500-600 but I shoot a lot of College Hockey and that is just too much reach. I prefer to shoot from Ice level not high in the stands. I have good access to sidelines for college lacrosse while that reach would be great I can get away with out it. So all that being said an 80-200 or 70-200 would have the most utility between sports, portraits, and the street. Even though I already have those focal lengths covered I would like something that focuses faster and locks better than the 55-300 and of course is sharper.

I have GAS. Here are the parameters. I have $800 to spend no more. I have a Nikon D7100 with the following glass. 18-55 and 55-300 kit lenses, 35,50 and 85 mm 1.8 primes. I like to shoot sports, hockey and lacrosse as well as Street and portraits. I would love a 70-200 2.8. But with 2 in college I can not justify spending more than $800 right now. I am not opposed to refurb or used. The kit lenses are what they are, I love my primes because I think each one is a great value for the money. So I am looking for a lens that is a good value. Suggestions? Any ideas on great values in that price range? Thank you

Well I also have a second hand D7100 and a brand new D750. When I migrated from crop to full frame I had the challenge to get better glasses still saving some money. I purchased 80-200mm f2.8. I don't regret for a millisecond! What a lens... all d7100 lenses were DX so I could be used to regular outcomes. Image quality, contrast, resolution really changed positively after this purchase.

Yes it may be focus slower than 70-200 and does not have all the bells and whistles. However it is a great cost benefit hardware. If I would have the money of course I'd buy the best one available. But I think that it perfectly fits my needs.

If you buy the 80-200 you may find that 55-300 is useless (despite being much lighter) and you could sell it.

Good luck

I recommend you consider the Tokina 70-200 f4. It is an excellent lens. I have one and use it as the primary lens on my D7200. It is a full frame lens, but it is great on the 7xxx series Nikons. I just checked price on B&H and Adorama and they are selling it for $829.95. Read reviews and make your own decision, but for my money, this is an excellent lens, very sharp and it has vibration reduction technology.

MPB.com has one for 949.00 and if you have some old gear around they will take it in trade to get the price down. I have purchased from them several times and am extremely pleased with their quality and service.

If you don't shoot in light dungeons, i.e., gyms, then get the f/4 version of the 70-200 or the Tamron 70-210 f/4 vc.

Thanks that is helpful! I eventually want to replace the 55-300 with the 28-300 for a walk around. But I think my priority will be the 2.8 faster glass. So let me ask you how is the 80-200 on the D7100? I know it is great on a full frame but I am also hearing mixed opinions on using it on a crop.

I did say that I shoot Hockey. Does that qualify as a light dungeon? I can’t imagine much worse lighting conditions than an ice rink and shooting through 3/4 inch dirty glass.

So it sounds like the 80-200 af d used is a good buy. Next question is where is a good place to find one used that can be trusted? I am not sure I know enough about lenses to go the eBay route. Adorama? B&H? Any others?

The 80-200 f2.8 lens is an excellent optic and as has been said, the price should be within your budget.

Wait. Save the $800.00 and put it toward the 70-200 later. That is the lens you need.

Agreed! The 70-200 is WORTH the wait and saving for it. Tack sharp. I love this lens. A lot of naysayers of the 28-300 but I have one and not an issue with it. BUT... it is nowhere close to the 70-200 by any stretch.

Second I feel I am still learning and want to focus (no pun intended) on improving skills to get better images not using using the latest and greatest to get it done. I like creating the “art”. And I like doing it with good tools that are a good value. I use a D7100 that I bought refurb for $600 pretty hard to beat that body at that price. I know it is old and has its limitations. But sometimes limitations force you to improve skill and it produces very good images. I really like it when more experienced photographers appreciate my images then are floored with the equipment I used to produce them. But the biggest reason is I am cheap. I admit it.

My wife tells me I can’t be cheap, but I can be frugal🤔

I bought my used lenses from B & H with no regrets. They work great and saved a bunch of money.

I just purchased a Tamron 18-400 for my D7200. I've been very pleased so far.
