Very interesting.

I'm glad you enjoyed these shots, Hal. In case you would like to know more about the history of this facility, here's a link:

Great set.
Where?

Thank you! This is in a little wide spot in the road known as DeLeon Springs North of Deland, FL on route 17. It is just off the road but so overgrown it is easy to miss. It is also fenced and not easily accessible.

Ditto number three. What is growing up side? A tree? Is it a Vine? Looks like a palm, but "odd". Headed off when it got to sunlight. The storage tank is probably Gulf Cypress wood. Will last a long time.

In #3 that is an old cabbage palm growing just in front of the tower. It is wrapped in vines. I agree that the tank is most likely indestructible cypress. Even in its distress it has that soft patina of aged cypress.

Excellent set, Carol. I love your B&W processing.

Thank you. It is a learning process and I feel I have a ways to go but I plan to keep working on it!

Okay, I know where that is.
I remember driving through Apopka in the fall (Before the big freeze.) where another plant was located - Always smelled like Fruit Loops.

Fascinating subjects with strong compositions. I find the water tower and palm particularly engaging. Re processing, I wonder about reducing the whites in the clouds (if you have detail there) so that the bright sky doesn't overpower the structures. #1 seems a little dark - always fun to figure out what works best on UHH's mustard yellow - and perhaps would benefit from more separation of tones?

Linda, I appreciate you taking a detailed look. Regarding the skies, I need to go back and re-evaluate the processing. In had just rained. Half the sky was very dark and there was some blue breaking through in other areas. In places the clouds were very hazy rather than clearly defined and parts of the sky were flat, smooth gray. I felt most of these tended to be too dark and I was trying to get some highlights to add a little life. I didn't feel very successful in getting the look I "felt". I think I'll watch a couple of videos on B&W processing and give one or two of these another try.

Packing plants smell good compared to processing plants where they make concentrate and OJ! There are a lot of overgrown, deteriorating gems in this part of the country.

It was still raining very lightly when I was shooting these, but I really tried to take my time and get the shots framed right. I had a paper towel that I kept using to wipe off my camera. I'm glad you enjoyed them. I would like to go back on a dry day!

Yesterday I had a little photo shoot at a local abandoned landmark. It is the Strawn Citrus Packing plant, built in 1921 and home of the premium brand Bob White Oranges. The packinghouse, along with a nearby sawmill and other agricultural buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. Unfortunately the site is in a state of ruin. I chose to process these in B&W because I felt it fit the age and condition of the structures. I also have these shots in color and may post that version later. Please feel free to make any suggestions for improvement.

Thank you, Karin. It's kind of funny but the water tower was sort of an afterthought and it turned out to be the favorite!

Great series Carol, It's a shame it is in such neglected condition
