My wife and I will be going to Asheville in mid July. We want to take some day trip so what are your suggestions. I'd like to photograph some waterfalls but would also like to explore the area.
Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Just Fred Loc: Darwin's Waiting Room

No trip to Asheville is complete without a tour of the Biltmore Estate and gardens. Plan on taking a whole day. Also, if you don't mind driving moderate distances, you can check out Grandfather Mountain with the Tweetsie Railroad, Blowing Rock, and a bit further away, Cherokee.

The obvious attraction to visit while in Asheville is the Biltmore estate. But consider venturing to CARL SANDBURG's estate at Flat Rock, near Hendersonville. Chimney Rock State Park is also worth some time and of course, there is the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can't miss that one.

Transylvania county has tons of waterfalls. Get info from tourist bureau. Blue Ridge Parkway winds around Asheville. Go south for Pisgah National Forest scenes (Looking Glass Falls, Looking Glass Rock, Cullasaja Falls, Table Rock, etc). Go north for Linville Gorge, Blowing Rock. Go west for Maggie Valley, Roan Mountain, Smokies. Do not miss Chimney Rock. Have fun.

If you go to Biltmore in July I would HIGHLY suggest taking one of those spray bottles with a battery operated fan with you because it is not air conditioned and it gets very hot inside the house.

For waterfalls try Route 276 from Brevard to Waynesville (or reverse direction) through Pisgah National Forest. Some are very close to the road. This “loop” from Asheville might take all day depending on stops.

I agree. One of the best routes in the area. The river winds alongside the roadway. Incredible scenery!

Bird Dawg Loc: Georgia

The Blue Ridge Parkway goes right by Asheville. Go North or South and you will love it. Beautiful and great photography. Tip: go south to the Mt.Pisgah Inn and have their trout. The best in NC. Have a great trip.

ERoutten Loc: Raleigh, NC

Another great spot for waterfalls, a little closer to Asheville, is Dupont State Forest.

Lots of good suggestions here including Blue Ridge and waterfalls in the area should be fabulous with all of the rain. You should know, however, there is no photography allowed inside the Biltmore Estate Building-exterior & grounds are fine. Another location often overlooked is the Grove Park Inn, a 1920's era hotel with fabulous vistas of the area and magnificent architecture including probably the nations' largest collection of Craftsman furniture from it's heyday. Lunch on their veranda is a wonderful experience albeit pricey.

A good place to visit, if you have the time, is the cradle of forestry. See https://cradleofforestry.com/

Asheville center is a great area to photograph street views.

The State Arboretum is very close. Nice forest trails. I go there for fall color every year.
