Good morning! I am feeling a bit persnickety this day. I read through some pages here last night and this just came to me. Normally I am not sarcastic as it unkind however my wits would have replied.." Oh yes and believe it or not I know exactly which button to push."

Got to jump in again. Why not tell them the truth. the great camera helped a lot. for instance a picture that you used your $2000 28 -200 f2.8 lens wide open so you can have a sharp subject and blured background. You could say yes i have this great lens that enabled me to get this subject sharp and the background blured, by the way we call it bokeh. I couldn't have done this if I didn't know how to use the lens. After a few how you used your knowledge to get the most out of your great equipment you my point out one and say "This one I could have taken with a Point and shoot camera and then go into how you used the rule of 3rd's ot whatever to get the great shot. If you want to be just as rude as they are give them the chef and pots thing. I think it would be better to do alittle teaching. - Dave

Dave,

Most people don't really have time or want to hear the "truth" or be given a lesson... I think the appropriate response is a simple YES. If more questions follow, then I would ask if they would like a more detailed explanation, otherwise just let it go. And PLEASE don't use the term bokeh in any discussion whatsoever. Ouch. :-)

I don't give smart answers unless someone is terribly rude. I'm not shy, so if they are rude, I know how to handle that. As far as hurt feelings...mine never get hurt. Psychology teaches us that we should be responsible for our own happiness and in control of our own feelings.
Compared to a lot of things people do to each other, asking ignorant questions should just amount to a small giggle. There are many things much worse that the co-worker could have said.

And there are many worse things that I could think of in response. If you allow the a--holes of the world continue on their merry way, then the situation never improves. Mark Twain once remarked that if you make everything foolproof, you end up over-populating the earth with fools. Same goes for thoughtless morons, etc.

Since we are talking about the best and the worse, I thought you would enjoy these. If anyone needs inspiration, just look at these 'shapshots' for a while.

Maybe they are trying to imply that, as your camera is expensive, you have talent and knowledge to work with such a fine piece of hardware, and get beautiful pictures with it.

Maybe.

Haven't heard of the term "shapshots"... is this a 1930s expression? Regardless, what I see in back of the "create an account" popup screen looks pretty inspirational.

A local photographer was invited to display his landscape prints at a charity banquet hosted at the home of a very well to-do dowager patron of the arts. After the photo gallery had been viewed, and all of the guests were seated at the great table for dinner, the dowager loudly said the the photographer at the other end of the table "Beautiful photographs - you must have an expensive camera!".

Later, when a flaming, fancy desert was served, the dowager again addressed the photographer "What do you think of my Crème brûlée flambée? It is my own recipe." To which the photographer replied "Not bad, you must have an expensive stove!"

Now, among photographer friends, it is common to give a back-handed compliment, by saying "You must have an expensive stove!"

Nikonian,

It would have been funny if he had said "Actually, I took these with my iPhone." At least half of those in attendance would probably be at the Apple store the next day.

I've been reading everything this forum has to offer plus anything else that has to do with photography. I try and shoot everyday in order to become better at taking pictures. Notice I did not say "becoming a photographer". I know I have a long way to go and I am willing to work at it. Well the other day a co-worker who has seen some of my work and would like me to shoot her asked me if it was my camera that made all of my pictures (the one I do show people) turn out so good. I sat there dumbfounded for about 15 seconds thinking of something smart to say when I just looked at her and said she was completely right.

Turt1e. Never LET your feeling sbe hurt by ANYONE.
People can really be a pain when they assume they know how things work when they have NO clue.
I'm glad to see so many in agreement that its actually a great eye that makes a great photograph.
I am one of those paint & brush artists they refer to. I can paint with ANY kind of paint and ANY kind of brush. I do love good brushes, but all they do is help smoothe what is already there. It doesn't take the most expensive brushes, just the ones that will do.
In order to do your best, be deaf and blind to what people have to say or write to you about your work. Some of what you see and hear is just jealousy. Just keep on keeping on and walk straight through that fog without so mauch as batting an eye. Just give 'em a good hardy tongue-in-cheek grin and carry on!!!!

Sometimes I ask people the "what camera" question because I am wondering if I can do the same kind of thing with mine.

i really do believe that most non-photography people really believe its the camera that takes the good photos.

and you cannot fix stupid.

It isn't only the "NON" photo people that think that way!! On a couple of my first posts in various threads, someone with a "fancy" DSLR complimented me on some scenic views and wanted to know what camera and lens I used. When I told them that the pics were from a Fuji Pocket Size P&S they just shut up and never asked again!! LOL!!

That request from other photographers can be innocent enough when it springs from a genuine desire to know the techniques behind making the photo. I frequently e-mail photos to a few folks and include camera, lens, EXIF, processing, and other notes. My granddaughter wondered why I put all that stuff in the message and I had to explain that there were some folks who liked to see it there and would ask me about it if I forgot. Often I also am curious about the making of a photo and like to see that same information but not for the purpose of attaching some sort of "worthiness" index to it. I too have used P&S, Brownie, Instamatic, home-made pinhole, etc., and know good interesting photos can be made with any of them and more besides.
