MT,

What I thought was strange was that for months they've denied entering the market even though there were rumors that one was forthcoming. Funny thing is that thee schematics on the proposed model don't look anything like the actual model. Then Bang! I get this B&H newsletter that not only are they getting into it, it's already on the shelves.

Its pre-order only, availability expected around October 15th, if you believe Canons announcement dates. Still waiting to see their 1DX body and 200-400mm w/1.4x converter both announced for release LAST year.

Tamron has just received patents for small interchangeable lenses, presumably for the mirrorless market from Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Pentax, and now finally Canon. The trend is here to stay, but right now the price point is hard to justify. It will come down though.

I shoot Canon (5D MII and 7D) and own a Sony NEX-7 for my vacation camera. I was hoping/looking forward to the Canon mirrorless camera.

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to compare well to my NEX-7: size, lack of lenses, no optical view finder, no articulating display, completely menu driven. I agree with the previous post, Canon has a long way to catch up.

Robert,
What do you mean, "lack of lenses?" The new "M" has an adapter that lets the user attach ALL of the EF and EF-S lenses that Canon makes.....plus it's got 2 of the new STM lenses that Canon is just now coming out with. According to the following preview, in the UK (don't know about the USA though) the M will have both a new flash unit AND the adapter INCLUDED in the kit....not a bad deal in my book!

Here is a link to some sample images and videos to make a judgment about, but, to me, they look pretty darn good.....so I wouldn't just automatically write off this camera as compared with Olympus or Panasonic.

The overriding issue here is to keep in mind that Canon is dubbing this camera as a "compact" camera, part of its point-and-shoot family. Yes, it has some nice features that give even DSLR's a run for their money.....but it's still a compact camera!

Strange choice for a name. I mean "Evil," not "Canon," although telling someone that you have an evil canon might get their attention. :D

R-P,

This is scary! I also shoot a 5DMKII & 7D and I also have an NEX-7 with nearly the whole compliment of lenses in a kit bag by the door for quick trips around town. I also have the 5N with the optional EVF finder. I was going to trade-in the 5N on the 7, but it's such a handy lil' bugger, I couldn't bear to part with it.

It's a touch screen menu. Hate them.
No viewfinder. I do not believe sharp pictures come forth hand held from arms length. And with the sun at your back?
My opinion:
Overpriced.
Fundamentally Flawed.
Something Michelangelo never would have used.
Maybe not even Thomas Kinkade!

I can't imagine why anyone who owns a DSLR and assorted lenses would want this camera......especially at $799 plus another $200 if you want the adaptor that allows you to use your EF lenses! The touch screen alone is enough to deter any serious photographer from buying this. I only see this as an option for the point and shooters who want to upgrade to an ICL camera.
