Well the 5DIV (no such thing as a D5 IV) has only been out since Sep of 2016 so using it for years is a real trick.
I have one and have no problem with the sharpness when I do my part. I mostly use it with a Tamron 180 macro or my Canon 100-400L mk2 - both with and without 1.4x III extender.

I'm curious, what's better than the "L" series lenses?

The upper level higher priced L lenses tend to be better than the less expensive models. Also some third party lenses with a price tag of a used car are said to be better. I wouldn't know since I can't afford one of those.

If the equipment (as well as the shooting environment, subject, etc..) is truly "equivalent", then you must look at the only other significant variable.

The photographer.

Borrow your friend's Nikon and try it. I doubt if the images are any different on the Nikon to the Canon.;
Best suggestion in this thread. Shoot same, various scenes with both cameras for a day and you will have your own answer.

... b) BUY BETTER GLASS

OP stated he uses L lenses. Canon makes no better lenses. Just what would you suggest?

First, define equivalent camera and equivalent lenses. Second were his picture of the same subjects as yours and at the same settings in the same light? What mode were you both using? Was image stabilization available in both setups? Did you capture images yourself on his gear and find that they were sharper than similar images taken by you on your own gear? While Nikon cameras tend not to have a low pass filters and therefore may appear marginally sharper, it would be relatively subtle all other things being equal. But of course all other things are never equal so it would be hard to draw conclusions based on your incomplete anecdotal evidence especially since you confused the name of your camera and implied years of use with a camera that was first released only 22 months ago. Could you please clarify and provide examples?

Maybe you just need new glasses.
Not the camera ones, the kind you wear.

You can get sharp photos with just about any camera as long as they are working properly, most likely it's the person behind the camera and the settings used.

This is a moot argument that has gone on for too many years. No one can look at a photograph and tell which brand of camera/lens took the picture because there are too many variables at play.

Thank you this has no value

It could be your friend's technique is simply superior, and what may appear as less sharp is actually blur due to camera shake, improper focusing, or too high ISO setting used. Or perhaps some combination of the three.

It's because your camera got confused. It doesn't know whether it's a Canon or a Nikon. Although you said it's a Canon but a D5 is a Nikon and not a Canon.
