I about three weeks I am doing the Budapest to Amsterdam Viking River Cruise. I will be taking 22 16GB cards.

Wow, What brand of 16gb cards are you using?
Yes, I do agree DO NOT PUT ALL OF YOUR EGGS in ONE BASKET!! Still you may have quite a few images saved on that one 16gb card, but imagine how many images you might have on one 32gb card.!!
Very Scary if those cards get lost, stolen, or destroyed.!!

Thanks to everyone for pitching in with advice and comments. I think I'll wind up taking 5 or 10 16 GB cards. Although I'm a grammar nazi myself (pet peeves: there, their, they're; its, it's; your, you're; lense :)), give Mike the benefit of the doubt. His finger might have lingered just a bit too long on the 'o' key.

last year in europe for 3 weeks i took several thousand photos...i took both jpeg and raw photos...i filled up 9 32 gb cards.

for my next trip i have purchased a wd sd hard drive that will allow me to copy my photos the the hd every night. i will leave photos on the card and have a back up on the hd. i will probably also put in drop box using my phone or ipad...dont plan on taking my laptop...

have a great trip

You don't use the internet to backup your files with this device.

No I don't. First of all, everything I shoot is in RAW 40-46Mb files (D800) and I shoot at least 200-300 pictures a day. The Internet is too slow to upload all that data over night. I backup everything on the second flash memory card in my camera and, using my laptop, on USB memory sticks.

I wouldn't use Internet offsite storage in any case because of security and control reasons. At home everything is backed up on a 5-drive RAID system. One of the drives is periodically swapped with a another drive that is always in my bank safe deposit box and the drive from the bank is inserted in the RAID where it is updated. That way I have offsite storage that is safe and under my personal control in an emergency.

I wouldn't have a problem moving to a 32gig card, and you can get a card holder that is waterproof for under $15 or so. I forgot if the 750 has two slots, but you could have first slot take raw, second slave to jpeg, so you always have two copies. just a thought. My last trip I also backed up to 2T compact drive as well, so I had 3 copies of everything. Good shooting!

I'm not trying to be funny but, to me, a 16gb sd card is a throw-away card. I don't even own one. The minimum card for me is 32gb but in my primary cameras I use 1-128gb card with a 64gb for overflow or backup. I only shoot raw. I make a lot of images. On any trip I always have and external drive to go along with my laptop. If I edit on a trip I always use DropBox Pro for my finished images and I sometimes park everything there. I never use a compressed feature because I want as many pixels as I can get. Have fun on your trip.

I am preparing for a 3 week trip to Europe. It will include a 10-day river cruise (Basel to Amsterdam). Judging from my past experience, I will take between 500 and 750 photos. I use a D750 which will allow up to 292 RAW, lossless, 14 bit compressed photos per 16GB sd card. My question is: Is it better to take more 16GB cards, thus minimizing loss of photos if a card is lost or malfunctions; or to take fewer but larger capacity cards?

Any advice out there?

Actually, I don't use the Internet when I travel. It is too risky.

How is the Internet too risky from a place like Western Europe?

I always used card that approximated a couple of rolls of film. That way I wouldn't lose too much if I lost a card. So I am in favor of more and smaller cards.

I use 32gb and 64gb cards, with some older, slower 16gb cards as backup. 1 in camera, 2 or 3 others in their individual cases in camera bag for daily shoots, other spares in suitcase in 12 pack hardcase. I'm of the "multiple smaller reduces risk" school.

My MO is to have 2 copies of photos. Photos copied to HDD in laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T430, old, but built like a tank) at night. Only after another copy is done to an external 2.5 HDD (HGST) do I format SD card for reuse.

I also take a backup camera; accidents do happen. For any HDD, before first use, do a long (not quick) format, then do a full chkdsk scan. I also use Hard Disk Sentinel and StableBit Scanner to monitor HDD temps and health.

Cards and HDD's are cheap; time is not.

In your first sentence, move the comma after the word "kept" to after the word "lose".
In your third sentence, use "that" instead of "which" since the noun is followed by a restrictive clause. Unless you learned British English, then you can have a pass for that one.
In your fourth sentence you need a space after the word "will". On second thought, there are so many grammatical errors in this sentence I would suggest deleting it and trying again.
In your final sentence, move the period inside the closing parenthesis. This is done when a sentence is started with an open parenthesis.
You would know all this if you paid attention in grammar school.
In your first sentence, move the comma after the w... (show quote)

I use both slots to make duplicate RAW files on both cards. That way you have two data copies in your camera. JEPG files are very compressed and if you loose your RAW data, you will be left with files that contain only a portion of the data that you need for versatility in editing and producing the highest top quality product.

That is exactly what Mark did, just one card was missing, and would the result have been the same if one card had failed? That is the question.

I shoot Nikons (a d800 and a d810) Both camera have two slots for cards. One is a CF and the other an SD card. I set the camera so that one slot backs up the main card. That way if one fails, I have my shots on the other card. I shoot 32gig cards and change both at the same time. I am back up crazy. Years of shooting semi pro have taught me to be careful. I have NEVER lost a shot.

Gee, folks. I never expected so many responses to my question. I thank you all for your input. I have decided to move up to 32GB cards due to the many suggestions here. I will take 4 with me and use my 8 16GB cards for any extras. This should give me plenty of storage for my type of shooting. If I take 200 shots per day, that is a lot.
