I own both the 7100 and 7200 and the 7200 is much improved over the 7100. Have never had a bit of trouble with either model and I really don't understand the negative reviews. You might want to consider purchasing from B&H or Adorama, however, as they exercise far better control over U.S. versus grey market models.
I’ve had the camera for over a year- traded down from a d810 for a lighter camera to travel with- have used it already on 3 trips - Galapagos , Paris and Amalfi coast- for both wildlife and scenery and considering the cost and weight, it’s the perfect camera to travel with. Pictures are amazing and with the double SD card you have back-up.

I have a D5100 and am thinking of upgrading to the D7200.I read a bunch of bad reviews on the Amazon site which made me think twice about it. Has anybody read those reviews on Amazon and believe them? I know I've read other reviews on other things on Amazon and they seemed off the wall.It seems most of the things I've read on the Hog have been good.
If Amazon sold Rolls Royces, you'd see bad reviews for them. Look at real reviews by real reviewers. I don't have my links on this computer, but Google has over eight million references. Take your time.
The D7xxx is a great series.

People, in general, are idiots. Many people do not know how to write reviews. I've seen lots of four-star reviews that praised the item to the hilt. Then why not give it five stars? Other people give a product a bad rating because shipping box was damaged, or the PO lost it, or it was a gift, and the recipient didn't like the color. I just skim Amazon reviews and look for specific, factual complaints.

Bad reviews about the D 7200? It was replaced by the D7500, but it is a stellar camera and in some ways superior to the camera which replaced it..
I have the D7200 it's a great camera..forget what Amazon reviews have said. You will not be disappointed with your investment if you do decide to purchase it. The short time I've had my 10,000 pictures and not a single flaw..smooth like butter.
I also own and use a D7200 and I'm very happy with it.
I didn't read the reviews for this camera on Amazon. Reading reviews of other products over the years, I would say many of the negative reviews are from folks who didn't know how to use the product they were reviewing.
Today the choice between the D7200 and the D7500 could be a tough one. There are updated electronics in the D7500, but you lose the ability to use a battery grip or use a second card. Those may not be important to you, and if not you should look at both cameras.

I recently went from the 3100 to the 7200. Perfect fit for my needs and skill level. I love the 7200.
All reports by people that really knows the digital cameras and have studied them in detail say that the D-7200 is one the best if not THE best Nikon DX type camera. Read below a very detailed report the D-7200 from Ken Rockwell:
kenrockwell.com/nikon/d7200.htm
I have read several of his reports in special the one on the camera I purchased, (from B&H Photo), my D-750.
Good Luck
I use a D7000 but everything I know about the D7200 is very positive. Many "reviewers" are not experienced photographers so take their opinions with a grain of salt.
I am quite sure that the D7200 will serve you well and by the way, the D5100 is not satisfying your needs?
There is a big difference between I want and I need.

The D7200 (D7XXX) lineup has a bunch of better and more professional features that are NOT found on the Nikon D3XXX and D5XXX (D5100) lineup. One of the most important (to me) is the focusing motor allowing me to use Non- SWM (lenses that do NOT have the Nikkor Silent Wave Motors) in them. This increases your access to a much larger lineup of very good lenses.. Nikkor and others, some new and some used. There are also a lot of other features on the D7xxx lineup that are NOT on the D3XXX and D5XXX models (which Nikon considers entry level or amature lenses. Also the FX lenses (which and be used on all of the DSLR models) with or without the SWM motors, tend to be a better grade of lenses and use glass and metal parts rather than plastic lenses and parts.
I have a D-7200 and it is a fine piece of equipment but it is not a FF.

After he wrote the review you linked to, Ken reviewed the D7500. Here is what he said about that:
If you already have a D7100 or D7200 and use it for nature, landscape, architecture, travel and other things that hold still, there's no reason you have to update to the D7500, but if you shoot anything that moves, like sports, action, birds, wildlife or kids, then the advantages of the D7500 are obvious.---
Short answer. Very happy with mine and I’ve taken about 10,000 shots with it.

It's not crippled in anyway just because it's only got one.....
