I spent a week in the Smokys

What about going to Europe, like I did a week ago and having the first three consecutive days raining? It was pretty cold also with a breeze that made it even more miserable for me. When I was able to photograph I was depending on a family member who could not understand getting up early or getting late at night to make some images. Add to this that she suffers of neuropathies in the inferior extremities which made of her walking a misery.

Nothing worse than photographing in or close to the middle of the day and that was what I had to deal with. At night I had to do the walking on my own around a place I did not know enough to find my way back home.
I guess that is traveling! Next time I will get a professional guide.

Beautiful light on the stream, great job with the exposure and details too. That was no easy photo op and you showed your experience and knowledge. Fun critters too! Kathy, thank you for the reminder that photographers just need open their eyes to what is around them and the opportunities will be there, no matter the weather.

Thanks, Linda. I have about 10 versions of that little waterfall. I think this is the best. Trying to corral the lights and darks in the forest was hard. I was so blessed to see the animals I saw. I even saw a chicken! A real, egg-laying, farm chicken!

About having a "make lemonade" attitude, I don't do that well. But my interests are varied enough that there's usually something to look for to shoot. I'll admit that I wasn't a happy camper, as I don't do wet and cold well. But I consoled myself with the thought that those who had lived there frequently had that weather, so I was experiencing something that was sort of normal for them. That satisfied my "see it as they saw it" mindset.

Maybe not the images that you were hoping for, Kathy. But they aren't turkeys (couldn't resist). Your experience is exactly why I feel so blessed on those rare-and-wonderful occasions when the conditions I had hoped for actually happen and I get a killer shot. Don't give up on the Smokys, but shoot for Autumn next time. It can really be magical.

Thanks, f4. I had deliberately gone in the spring and not fall to avoid the crowds. I don't do crushes of people very well. I kept telling myself that I could always come back. Maybe someday - after I see everything else I want to see before I die? Love your humor.

Oh how I can empathyze. I always travel alone just because I don't like putting up with someone else's grousing about all that. It's so nice when I occasionally have an actual photographer as a companion! You know, one of those who, when you yell "STOP," s/he actually does?????

I've given up on not shooting at midday. I finally decided that at least 1/3 of the time the light isn't perfect, but it's what's there, so I need to learn to deal with it. Learning how to shoot convincingly in flat light is a challenge!

So true, but also why I don't do it well.

Thank you, Sylvia. Good advice. Yes, I loved all the waterfalls. And the elk probably wouldn't have been resting in that meadow if it hadn't been raining. I might have had better light. But, then, maybe not!

Thanks, Angela. It was an adventure. Driving through that fog was an adventure. At least I didn't get hot!!!!!

Thanks for your comments. I guess now I'm curious just how "normal" my time was there. Folks at church simply replied, well, that's why they're called the Smokies!"
