Best Buy does not do most pricing at the local store. Pricing is done centrally based on a fixed markup percentage tied to their purchase price from the manufacturer or wholesaler. Once they price a lot of items, they do not followup to see what the marketplace is doing. As a result, when a new model comes out, they do not always react and make adjustments. The people who do the central pricing may not even know what they are pricing. They may only know the department it is sold in and price it in accordance with the formula like little robots. Also, large stores often don't notice or don't care when a "small" quantitate of a product sits on the shelf a long time. They know that eventually someone who does not know its true value will buy the product.

I've seen this happen before with other products. I think the stores sometimes get a promotional deal with a manufacturer and then pass it along but it only applies to one model so sometimes that one is priced lower than an older model. I shoot with the d7100 but if I was going to buy now I'd pick the d7200--specially if it was less than the d7100. Go for it if it's a good deal and meets your needs.

Unfortunately there are only two places to shop for cameras, other than the low end cameras, and BB is one of them. We also have a nice camera shop in downtown Anchorage where I'll likely be doing all my shopping in the future.

The prices are screwy. What is wrong with mail order? B&H, Cameta, KEH, and Adorama are recommended by UHHers. Get the feel for a camera at a local shop, then order from one of these 4, new or refurbished.

Like I said before, I’m not looking to buy anything just now. I was merely oerusing BB. Also, as I stated earlier, up here wronlyhave one camera store and BB, and shipping to Alaska from places like B&H, etc., is almost prohibitively expensive.

Here's the thing with best buy - they will price match - even online prices or so they say. So find the best price you can online and see if they will match it.

I like to look at current camera prices, and I was just on the Best Buy site and noticed that the NIkon D7200 with the 18-140 lens is listed for $1099.99, while the D7100 is listed at $1299.99. Can this be correct, a camera several years older in production listed for $200.00 more than the newer one? This doesn't seem right! B&H has the D7100 and the same lens shown for $996.95.

Thanks. We will just be in the Missoula area for a few days. Our grandson is graduating from the Rocky Mountain School of Photography this Friday. I'd love to go to Billings, but it's a bit of a stretch unless we were going to be there a bit longer. It would be fun.

Again, I am not looking to buy anything at this point in time. I merely happened to notice the apparent price discrepancy and wondered if this was normal or not. And yes, BB will price match. They have done this for me in the past.

Authorized Nikon dealers [including Best Buy] sell Nikon products at prices set by Nikon. For some folks it is the only place within a reasonable distance to get your hands on a camera before buying. Even if the sales person is not knowledgeable, you should be before ordering online or buying from a big box store. We all have access to the same information.

I'm not looking to buy anything at the moment, but I do like to keep abreast of what's going on, marketwise. I just thought this might be an anomoly. I mean, why would they price the older one higher than the newer one? Doesn't make sense, especially when B&H has them both priced similarly. I agree, though, BB's sales people aren't usually knowledgeable when it comes to cameras and photography. My experience with BB is whatever one you're looking at "is a good one and takes very nice pictures." I find that the best way to shop cameras and gear at BB is to arm oneself with some knowledge beforehand so you don't have to ask a salesperson a question they can't answer.
I'm not looking to buy anything at the moment, but... (show quote)
I found the sales people at Ritz Camera very knowledgeable, at least the one in South Hills Village in Pittsburgh before they went out of business. I would take my wife shopping and look around Ritz while she does her shopping.

I buy from both B&H and Adorama, however the cost of shipping has me having stuff sent to my grandson's address in Montana, and he brings it up to me, or puts in the mail for a couple $$. Otherwise, something like a lens costs a minimum of $40.00 to ship it up here, if they will even ship it here. Mostly that happens when I try to order through Amazon.
