I use the black & white listed under adjustments. It keeps the color information in the saved B&W file that allows you to adjust each channel separately. The cactus shown here is an example.

I use the black & white under adjustments in CS4. It keeps the color information in the file after the conversion. This allows you to make changes in each color channel at a later date. The cactus is an example of what I have been able to achieve.

Two different formats, two different "conversion" methods.

These happen to be NIK Silver Effects and much like the darkroom of old ....you got to work at it. dodge /burn etc

I am using Photoshop CS6 But I'm sure CC has a great way to convert to B&W. Adobe has made so many great updates to every aspect of PS in the last few years
I intend to go the PS CC when I need a new computer.....soon

Photoshop Channel Mixer is also an good way to convert as are some of the great plug in's from Topaz and ON1
Its the best part of digital photography ......there are so many wonderful was to get to the end result.

To anyone experimenting with BW, once you have you BW image. play with the white balance slider/adjustment. It makes for some cool changes.

I have always just used the PS conversion to B&W for my shots and then I add a sepia layer for the ones I want to look older.

"There must be
Fifty Ways to Leave Your Color..."

NIK Plug-Ins: Silver Efx Pro 2 used below... But in Lightroom CC 2015 (Now Lightroom CLASSIC CC 2018).

It's been over a decade since I had Photoshop 7. So I have no idea whether Nik Plug-Ins work in it or not.

If you have Nik plugins you can try the "Silver Efex Pro" plugin. It does a good job. I don't have Photoshop 7 installed any longer but I did use the Nik plugins with it. The Google Nik collection as far as I know is still free so you should be able to download them. Other than that you can try converting the picture to grayscale and then work on it with levels and/or curves adjustments.

You mean Ps 7 !!!??? There was Ps 1 - 7, then Ps CS1 - CS6, now Ps CC. I have used Ps CS5 and (currently) CS6. Wow, 7 is ancient. I'd have to know the program to advise.

A wild guess. Do you have [b]Image > Adjustments > Black & White > black & white Color Channel Sliders (try playing with these to get a nice B & W rendition). I find as a usual starting point, raise or lighten yellow, lower or darken red, try moving the blue up & down to find a point. Green, magenta, cyan, or purple have less effective effect if any in most images. This can also be done in ACR as well. I find merely desaturating sucks. I've done a lot of B&W film photography so I'm picky about B&W digital conversion.
