50mm prime for Nikon D3300.

it depend on what you need , if you dont mine older film era lenses , then you save a lot [ manual focus ], and have good performer .
Not just loss of focus but metering as well.
You focus and guess exposure manually.

Beautiful shot. Love the backdrop. Re. the OP issue, Unfortunately the 3000 series of Nikon cameras is their most rudimentary of DSLRs. Ironically, as they get higher up in the food chain they are more compatible and easier to use.
I did see that he doesn't want to spend more than he paid for the D3300. There's an instant rebate going on with the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens right now which makes it $399.

Thank you. At the moment I'm thinking of the Nikon 35mm 1.8 DX which appears to be selling for just under $200

I believe that Nikon has a nifty fifty like Canon does. You can not go wrong with that lens if it as good as Canon is.
The D type lenses from Nikon will not work on D3300 as the camera does not have focus motor in the body which the lens needs to focus.

Now I'm really confused if I'm correct I was just told by another Hogger that the DX is an automatic Focus. I think my best approach is to find a knowledgeable person. in a retail store and get some hands on advice.
Appreciate everyone's input

I guess posting and highlighting the applicable page from your manual was not as helpful as intended ...
Your D3300 is a 'DX' camera. It uses a 'cropped' sensor that is smaller than a 'full frame' of 35mm film. Nikon full-frame cameras are also referred to as FX.
Nikon has maintained compatibility of their F-mount lenses between film cameras and DLSRs. Your D3300 is an F-mount body. However, as Nikon transitioned from manual focus film to auto-focus DSLR, they have released a variety of technologies that now in 2018 do not maintain
full operation and compatibility between all historical lens types and all DSLR bodies. The F-mount lenses can be mounted and used in manual focus. But, some auto-focus lenses will not auto focus on some bodies. The page 89 extract from the manual provides a table of these technical details.
This link is longer, but may help with more supporting details:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikortek.htmIf you limit your candidate lenses to DX, you avoid these issues for your D3300. Alternatively, if you limit your candidate lenses for AF-S or AF-P, you again avoid the complexities assuming you desire an auto-focus lens for your D3300.

AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D. Very good lens, will work on film Nikons as a standard "nifty fifty" and should be fine on your D3300 Crop Sensor camera as a "short" telephoto or portait lens.
It will not autofocus on a D3300. You need an AF-S lens.
You probably really want a 35mm lens for your D3300.

You can use the AF lenses as a manual focus lens on D5xxx and D7xxx series cameras, but for auto focus you will need AF-S lenses.
Edit: Correction: The D7xxx series has an in camera auto focus motor and AF lenses will Auto focus on those cameras. It is the D3xxx and D5xxx series cameras do not have in camera focus motors and AF lenses can only be used as manual focus lenses.
The AF lenses do autofocus woth D7xxx cameras. They have body focus motors.

DX has nothing to do with autofocus. It describes the sensor size.
You need an AF-S or AF-P lens to autofocus on a D3300.
You might need to upgrade your firmware to get full function with AF-P lens. It is a free download from Nikon. But right now you aren’t looking for an AF-P lens.

That is the one you want. It is an AF-S lens.

You are correct. In fact I just ordered an AF-S DX 35mm from B&H
Once again I'd like to thank everybody that took the time to respond. it's what makes this site really great

not sure the D lens will focus on the D3300 which has no in body focus motor

Would like to get a 50mm prime lens. Can anyone suggest a lens that performs well but doesn’t cost more than my camera did?
Coming late to the game perhaps already suggested but I suggest the Nikkor 35mm F1.8G DX. I love mine.
