Tamron's new SP series primes lenses all have vibration compensation. They also have a metal lens barrel and are fully weather sealed. I have the 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens. I use it on my D7000 and D500. The vibration compensation really helps in low light situations. B & H Photo has an instant rebate going on with that lens right now. I took this photo under continuous lighting that required long shutter speeds.

AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D. Very good lens, will work on film Nikons as a standard "nifty fifty" and should be fine on your D3300 Crop Sensor camera as a "short" telephoto or portait lens.

D series lenses will be manual focus only on the D3xxx series, 50mm f/1.8G would be better suited to the OP's D3300.

Really. I use it now on my D7100 but I originally used it on my D5000 which does not have a focus motor.

I'm willing to wager if you were able to auto focus on a D5xxx series it wasn't a D series lens.

A better choice would be Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8 G

Yes...This.
I have this G 50mm F 1.8 and it is an outstanding lens even at F 1.8! Worked awesome with my D3100 I had.

Would like to get a 50mm prime lens. Can anyone suggest a lens that performs well but doesn’t cost more than my camera did?

Not to hijack the thread. I have the Nikon 35mm prime 1.8. Bought it users for $150. it’s a fantastic Lens. Might be my favorite lens.

Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is about $200 new, and $169 factory refurbished. Either way, you cannot go wrong with this lens on your D3300.

I would like to suggest that you do not buy a 50mm lens but instead that you get a 35mm lens that will give you in your camera the equivalent view of a 52mm lens, pretty close to 50.
The 50mm lens will increase your field of view to that of a 75mm lens and now you are talking about medium size tele. If a medium size tele is what you need then the 50mm is a good choice.

I would suggest a lens of the same brand as your camera. Go for the f1.4. You’ll spend a few dollars more but besides being faster than the 1.8 or 2.0, the optics are generally of much better quality – especially if you are shooting with the lens open. You will not regret it. Be sure to have a good lens hood on it as well. Don’t bother with the f1.2s or the f1.0 as these lenses are generally much heavier, more expensive and less sharp. The 1.4s are the cream of the crop flagship lenses of camera companies.

Beautiful shot. Love the backdrop. Re. the OP issue, Unfortunately the 3000 series of Nikon cameras is their most rudimentary of DSLRs. Ironically, as they get higher up in the food chain they are more compatible and easier to use.

A 50mm on your D3300 would be like a 75mm on a full frame, more of a short telephoto than a "normal" focal length lens. I have the Nikon 35mm 1.8 for my D7000. It's a great "normal" focal length lens for low light, and under $200 at most places.

Will it give me auto focus?

Of course. It's a DX, made to provide full functionality on Nikon DSLR's.
