Coming late to the game perhaps already suggested but I suggest the Nikkor 35mm F1.8G DX. I love mine.

Just ordered one.
Thanks

I agree with par4fore. The 35mm is a much better choice as it gives a cropped camera the equivilent of a the old 35 mm camera's 50's.

I have an AF-S Nikkor 50 mm 1:1.8 G lens. It is fully compatible with my D3400 and is a great addition to my camera outfit. There has been enough discussion here over what cropped sensors do and do not do. The lens seems to work great for portraits, but I have no idea why, since it is still a 50 mm lens and I used to use an 85 mm lens for portraiture in the film days, at least I think it was 85. The difference between this 50 mm and that which I used on my film camera, is that the distance to the subject has to be greater. Perhaps that is why the image is so similar.

I absolutely love my 50 mm f1.8, which is about $165. I had one previous with my D90, which didn't require an internal focusing motor, and sold that with the D90, when I got my D5500. I bought the AF-S for the above price, and am extremely happy. One huge advantage is its small size.
