Oh my!!! I could never get anything that wonderful with my Nikon 750 with the similar Nikon lens. Just can't get sharp images even with a tripod and timer.

Why not? Your Nikon gear is every bit as good or better than the Tamron.

Yes I would. I know there are many people who are considering this lens...and for good reasons. I think it is a good choice for zoos, botanical gardens with the possibility of birds or animals, and even landscapes. Here are more photos with this lens from my recent trip to Florida.

These are magnificent!!!

Images are terrific! How does the IQ rate at the extreme ends of the focal range? Say at 18mm and again how about at 400mm? Also when extremely wide open as to aperture?

Some softness would be likely with many lenses. Just wondering about this one also wondering about same with the 150-600 lens from either Tamron and Sigma which are so popular.

Thanks, Tom

Thank you! I am generally happy with the 18mm and 400mm IQ of the 18-400. This is for personal hobby usage. If I expect to shoot birds and wildlife mainly, and don’t mind the extra size and weight, I think my Sigma 150-600 is sharper. Sometimes the 150mm is too long and I wish I was using a shorter lens. If I am doing mainly landscapes, the 18-400 works. I have started reusing my Nikon 16-85, for landscapes only, for possibly better sharpness. If I only want to use and carry one lens, it’s the 18-400.

I know you shoot Canon. I hope this helps.

Does indeed help! And thanks for taking the time to respond. Tom

There is no free lunch when it comes to ultra zoom lenses -- lenses with very wide range of focal lengths. Yes you can get "good" shots, even shots that thrill. But when you compare with zooms of comparable quality that cover a narrower focal length range, or with high quality primes, you will see the difference, especially at the long end.

.

No question. I totally agree but still wanted to hear experience, as many of these lenses do better than others. My Canon 70-300 L is not nearly as "ultra zoom" as the Tamron 18-400 but still a rather long zoom, is crystal clear from on extreme to the other. We all want our cake and be able to eat it as well!
