Because the sensor on the Oly has less image quality, one would like to use a faster lens to keep ISO low. The Canons sensor can get away with F4. Makes the two more equivalent for image quality.

The Oly has approx. 1 stop less image quality concerning ISO. The sensor has approx. 1 stop more equivalent DOF. To make the two systems more equivalent, the lens F-stop should account for that.

An f2.8 lens is an f2.8 lens...regardless of the system. Yes the DOF will be slightly different, but not a whole stop IMHO.

2.8 is 2.8

If you are doing landscape how is a shallow DOF going to help?

Come on Glenn! This is basic stuff how do you not understand it?

Technically since his IS is vastly inferior to Olympus, he has to shoot a higher speeds negating his ISO gains.

If you wish to choose a different fstop for a pic, do it. But that choice does not change the underlying physics. Consider the same analysis for full frame or medium format if you don't understand. Or, conversely, do the same analysis for a small compact type sensor, or even translate to a cell phones system. Different sensor sizes use different lenses to achieve similar results. Some prefer to resort to insults.

IS does little for action shots. If all of your subjects are motionless, well, then a particular thing such as IS may suit YOUR needs. Personally, I shoot a lot of action, IS is of little use. FAST focus and tracking is.

I hate to say it, but if you shoot a lot of action, then the em5ii is not the right camera for the job.

A suggestion about your lag time at startup. I have an EM 1 MK II and was experiencing a similar situation. Fortunately, Kenmore Camera in the Seattle, WA area had a show and had Olympus Technical folks on hand. They cleaned and upgraded the firmware from version 1.0 to 1.4 and it cleared up the lag in startup that I was experiencing. So you might want to check that your EM 5 is on the latest firmware version.

I switched from Canon 5D MK II to my Olympus kit and am very satisfied the new kit. We will all have different experiences, so there is no right or wrong choice.

I really like a lot about the Oly, and still may end up with one. If I were to take a picture of a camera, I would snap the Oly! Or the Fujifilm XT-20. But yes, right tool for the job. On that score, the Oly interests me for insect photography, where the IS may slide that compromise to an advantage. Tripods often are too slow to set-up, or scare the bugs. Increased DOF is a plus.

As is the focus stacking/bracketing...but you'll need a tripod for that.

yah, that feature is VERY compelling. Colder the bug, the better, in that case. The Oly focus stacking would make a great post subject. I would bet a lot of us are curious about real world experience on that.

What hype? My E-M5 II does everything I want it to. It was less than half of the price of the E-M1 II. The 14-150 lens stays on it most of the time. I even like the viewfinder, which is a first for me. No complaints here.
