As others have said, I share with family/friends on Smugmug but probably would be as well off on Google Photos that I do use for some backup.

I'm not looking to sell my work but I'd like to easily share my photos with friends and family. I'd like to allow access for viewing only as well as choosing images I'd allow others to download. It seems like a lot of Hoggers use Smugmug but for an enthusiast is that the best site? What other sites do people use? Are there any free sites or is it worth it to pay for a Smugmug subscription?
Well, so far the answer to your question "Is Smugmug everyone's favorite?" seems to be no.
I used Smugmug in the past, but switched to Shutterfly. I have 5 sites that I designed and use for sharing with others. Simple, fast and excellent tech support when needed.

I use Zenfolio and am very happy with it.

there are lots of them.. I use Dropbox. Its pretty good but they are always trying to get you to upgrade to a pay for play.
Picaso is another that a lot of my friends use, I looked at it but didn't go with it
Google foto seems to be a well liked site.
Smugmug was being used by two foto friends and they both dropped it and simply said it was not what they wanted anymore.
Smugmug will let you try it for about 30 days as I remember then you can decide.
Dropbox worked a lot better up to about a year ago when it started to not allow folk who I had authorized entry to and wanted them to pay for play.
Keep us posted on what you try and what you go with.
I use Dropbox. It's free and easy.
I use Smugmug, and I am very happy with it. I can easlily update my website. Prior to smug mug, I ussed mac's iWeb, and found that much more complicated to use.
As an Apple guy, I use Apple's iCloud Photo Share. I create albums each year that are thematic (Family 2017) and specific (Chihuly Exhibit BBG). I 'invite' people to join the albums and they get a notice anytime I update an album. For non-Apple users, they can either create an Apple iCloud account or I make the album 'Public', whereby a website link is created that I send to people. I also create an album for others to upload pictures to share with our family or friends (Other People's Pictures--I never allow people to upload pictures to my albums). I also create albums for work (construction) that I share with my clients, subs, or suppliers. I have no problem with family, friends, or clients, downloading the files. And, if done properly, space is virtually unlimited and free. If I was interested in selling my work, this would not be my choice.

I use Flickr and have been very happy with it, it's free too!
The free version of Flickr is very limited in what it can do. I think it only allows for 200 photos, 5 Albums, and no hierarchical structure at all. It wouldn't be enough for me, which is why I have a paid subscription.
You might check out fotki.com. Have used it for 10+ years w/good results. If you keep your uploads small, they won't charge you.

shutterfly? What do you see ast he pros and cons of it. I am looking at Icloud share and shutterfly??
I'd like to add to the mix PBase.com (
http://www.pbase.com/ ). I've been using it for over 10 years.
It's reasonably priced and they keep increasing the amount of storage you get for the price.
No ads. What I like in particular about the site is you can have hierarchies of "galleries" (albums) which contain individual photos or other galleries.
In addition, you can create virtual galleries which have copies of selections (does not add to the storage).
Here's my conglomeration:
