I'm not looking to sell my work but I'd like to easily share my photos with friends and family. I'd like to allow access for viewing only as well as choosing images I'd allow others to download. It seems like a lot of Hoggers use Smugmug but for an enthusiast is that the best site? What other sites do people use? Are there any free sites or is it worth it to pay for a Smugmug subscription?

I've been using Zenfolio for many years and find it to be very satisfying for what I do with my photos. Many of my photog friends use it as well. Smugmug has 5 plans vs 3 for Zenfolio. Both services offer monthly and annual plans. Smugmug is slightly less expensive but I think Zenfolio offers you more control over what you can do. Check out the plans and see what will work best for you. Good luck.

I really love SmugMug. However, I doubt if it is significantly different or better than other similar sites. I like how one can arrange and display images and use huge files without concern. My "operating system" is that this passion and joy of photography has led me to happily purchase, over time, an assortment of photo equipment that I never dreamed would be within my budget! I'm not going to flinch at paying the cost of a movie ticket a month to enjoy the photos myself and share them with friends and family.

The new cloud based version of Lightroom CC has some interesting sharing options. It is included in the $10/month Photographers Plan.

I use Flickr and am happy with it. Not that it's better than any other service. I find it convenient and I can publish directly from Lightroom.

Flickr fan here. I especially like the hierarchical structure possible to a paid subscriber: photos (full resolution) are placed into Albums; Albums can be grouped into Collections; Collections can also be grouped into higher level Collections; this can be many layers deep. My 41,000 photos are grouped into about 1000 Albums, and these are regrouped such that only about 40-50 choices (high-level Collections) appear on my Flickr home page. This greatly simplifies my task of sharing my photos with others. Flickr also has the ability to deny access to individual photos in various ways, should the need arise. I pay about $50/year for their service, and it's worth every penny. The ability to publish directly to Flickr from Lightroom is a plus (admittedly, also a possibility with SmugMug, which my church prefers).

I like Google Photos, and I use it to post pictures for different groups. I post the pictures from an activity in an album and then send the link to the group.

i use both the public & the private gallery settings. the public is for images I want to show to all who might be interested. the private is where I stash event shootings. i can then send the link to the event p.r. person & coordinator for their org's use. I don't sell (yet), the events have all been charitable orgs that I belong to, to a friends who does asks me to shoot. I like smugmug's ease of use & their support has always been right on top of answering my questions.

For sharing of photos with different groups of people I like to use Shutterfly. They have share sites that you create with what you want to share and then you can invite whom ever you like or set up different groups.

My wife uses Shutterfly and I use Sugmug. They work for us. But I also have Adobe CC and Google. Lots of choices.

I use flickr and wetransfer.com. With the latter you can send via email a large batch of photos to someone and they have 7 days to download them before they re removed from the server.

I export PDFs from Lightroom 6 to Microsoft's OneDrive and send email links - assigned privs allow editing or not.
