Hi all:

Seeking some advice as to which make/version of this lens would be the best fit for D7100?

I suggest reading some in depth reviews. Otherwise, the varying opinions on this site will drive you bonkers.

My son has the first generation Tamron 150-600 and loves it. I have used it and love it too. From what I have heard the Sigma sport is sharper but a lot heavier and Tamron's second generation lens is a lot better then the first one. We can see nothing wrong with the first generation (even though it seems that the quality of this lens does vary from lens to lens), so if you van get a get one of the first generation you get a steal for the price it's selling at now.

Whatever makes you happy and the results please you is the choice you make.

Other than Nikon glass I have a couple of Tamron's The 150 600 wont upset you. It is a good lens and the price will be pleasing to you

Dont think you could go wrong with it. Easy to use very good quality, I use hand held a lot or find a local support

The best fit is the Nikon 200-500 - used and managed properly - crop your way to 600mm and beyond .....

F5.6 beats f6.3 in my book .

Regarding 150-600's - How much $$ are you willing to spend and how much weight are you willing to carry/manage ??

I believe the Tamron G1 is the lightest/cheapest and is an OK lens if you keep it to 500mm or less and use on a crop body - like you have.

I have used it (first generation Tamron lens) on a D750 at 600mm and I am very pleased with the results. From the reviews have read, I believe that the quality control of the lens was not that great with Tamron and there are models out there that are not that good and others that really good. My son got lucky with the sample he got.

Hi, I have posted this in another thread one or two days ago. It thought that it might be helpful he too: Hi, I got Sigma 150-600 Contemporary last year around Black Friday for $750 at the store that claims that their Buy is the Best. Their price match policy works well. Anyway I'm very happy to use it on my D5500 mostly for shots of wild birds (hand held), moon etc . Stabilisation and auto focus work fine for me. Please don't take this as a professional opinion, I'm just a hobbyist throwing in my 2 cents...

Thank you. I’ll check out that store.

I had a Sigma 150-500 that I felt was not real sharp. After checking the reviews on both Tamron and Sigma 150-600 I decided to stick with the Sigma 150-600 Sport.
I have been very happy with it. The sharpness is greatly improved over the 150-500. If the extra money and weight are not an issue I would recommend it.
