Hi all:

Seeking some advice as to which make/version of this lens would be the best fit for D7100?

Regards to all.

If you don't mind a 6 pound lens then I'd recomended the Sigma Sport. If you don't want a lens built like a tank then the Tamron G2 is the way to go. If money is an issue but you still want a decent lens, the Sigma Contemporary may be what you are looking for.

I researched all three as well as the Nikon 200-500. Tested the Tamron G2 and the Sigma C on MY D750 body. I eliminated the Sigma Sport because of $$ and weight. Next the Nikon was eliminated since I need the extra 100mm reach. I ended up with the G2 and so far am very pleased. Here is a test shot late in the afternoon when I got it home. My Minpin sitting on her pillow on the pool deck. Download the click the image to zoom in. You can then see a small purple stitch on her nose below one eye. D750 G2 @ 150mm 1/500 f/5.6 ISO 400 handheld, JPG no PP. You can also see a reflection of something in the highlight in her eye. Will post more test shots soon.

Hi, I have posted this in another thread one or two days ago. It thought that it might be helpful he too: Hi, I got Sigma 150-600 Contemporary last year around Black Friday for $750 at the store that claims that their Buy is the Best. Their price match policy works well. Anyway I'm very happy to use it on my D5500 mostly for shots of wild birds (hand held), moon etc . Stabilisation and auto focus work fine for me. Please don't take this as a professional opinion, I'm just a hobbyist throwing in my 2 cents...

Precisely correct.
...and the differences are not very big...most people will be hard pressed to see a difference so $ can play a part here. The G2, sigma S and C are all really close (at some ranges the C beats the S ...just not at 600mm where 80% of all your shots will be taken).
...no bad decision here....

I had a Sigma 150-500 that I used on a D7000 and also on a D750 and I was never satisfied with the sharpness of the sigma lens, I sold it and bought the tamron 150-600 G2 and the difference was like day and night, the tamron lens was noticeable sharper.

Most of my research prior to buying the Sigma C suggested that the G2 was better but never saw an evaluation either on a website or a personal review that rose to the level of "night and day" difference. Could by copy to copy variation (3rd party lens copy to copy seems to have a wider range than OEM lenses). Since you tested both, then your experience trumps my research :-)

Also I did read that there was a bigger difference on Nikon than Canon (Dpreview article).

I would recommend to the OP taking both out for a spin on your body and make your own call.

(...and there is a very consistent blog and photography website reporting that the G2 is much better than the G1 )

I use the Tamron 150-600 G2 on a D7100 and love it. Check Best of the Tetons web site Mike uses the G2.

I use the Tamron 150-600mm G2 with the D7200 and the D750. It is a great lens. Very sharp and quick focus.
