Starbucks, anyone?

My favourite is "a big honkin' cup of the strongest black coffee ya got" at Starbucks. Delicious and no costlier than Seattle's Best, Dunkin's, or (yuck) McD's. Even their instant in the little tubes is superior. My daughter likes an occasional Flappagringo or Marciano - I call them hot milkshakes.

Just received an email from them announcing they are closing their website store, but I can "still" purchase my favorite coffee at my local store. However, my local store has gone from offering many varieties of beans to one. Most of my favorite coffees are single source beans. Fortunately, I found a good source on eBay. The seller (a husband & wife team) sells only coffee and roasts the beans immediately before shipping. They acquire beans from around the world, incl Jamaican Blue mountain. If any here would like the seller's eBay name I will gladly post it.
I presume Starbucks is closing their website because of poor sales. But I wonder if other economic issues are involved. Two or three years ago they built a beautiful brand new store located about 20 miles from my town. It closed within 6 months. In my town the store is limited to brewed coffee and related beverages. Interestingly, there is a small Starbucks concession in a corner of a Harris Teeter grocery located about 40 miles from me. They carry at least a half dozen whole bean varieties.
Coffee, anyone?😋

That's surprising about Starbucks.

I never got into paying for overpriced coffee just to look cool in front of my friends. Starbucks has always been overpriced and overrated in my book. I'm fine with Dunkin Donuts, Einstein Brothers or Coffee Beanery.

I tried lots of coffees - for home use - and I settled on The Aldi brand. I use either a Mr. Coffee or a Keurig, and I fill my own K-cups, so it cost me about five cents a cup. It would be hard for me to hand over $5.00 (or whatever they charge) for a cup of coffee.

I do most of my grocery shopping at Aldi, and I fill in the rest with the local Kroger or Meijer stores. Aldi has great coffee, but by the time I get done with my cream and sugar, I'm not sure how much coffee I'm actually tasting!

I gave up trying to get the milk and sugar ratios right. Now I just drink the coffee.

What is working for me these days is buying green beans. Amazon has a couple of sources for South American types, as low as $4/lb. Then, as needed, I roast about a pound at a time in a classic "PopCorn Pumper". Pretty much any other popcorn machine just doesn't hold up.
Two good things happen 1. my coffee is pretty cheap, 2. I am in control of its roast and flavor
check out www.sweetmarias.com. Has lots of different type green beans and roasting supplies.

Starbucks is over rated big time. McDonalds and White Castle have better coffee. In fact, Starbucks has lousy coffee.

I agree. Starbucks burns their beans (seeds, actually). Much better coffee is available.

I get my beans roasted while I wait from a Mom and Pop operation in Brisbane, Qld. I no longer use a grinder but now hand plane every bean with a Veritas D60 low angel block plane, well worth the effort!!

Do you have any skin left on your fingers?

Best coffee I ever had was Kona Peaberry. Only problem is cost--$50 per pound.

At least we can all agree, the best way to perk those beans is in a French Press. They are not as convenient as the Kurigs in fact, it's almost like a chemistry experiment but well worth the extra time.
I have a two cup model from Bodum that cost around $20. You can heat the water in the microwave to save a bit of time but, don't cheat on the four minute perk time before you press.

Have you checked any Kona growers directly? Most roast immediately before shipment. Price has been much less than mainland resellers. I have also purchased in - the - shell Macadamia nuts. To me, much better tasting than the roasted ones you find in the grocery store. However, you will need a hydraulic nut cracker as Macadamias have the hardest nut shell on the planet.

If there isn't an oil sheen on the top and a spoon or screwdriver doesn't stand up in it, it isn't coffee. As you can tell, I'm not an aficionado or connoisseur.

A Starbucks closing? 20 miles from your town? Were I live in CA, USA there are so many Starbucks that you can sometimes see a second one from the curb in front of the first. In the cities they are spaced about a mile apart. There are more Starbucks than MacDonalds and Jack-In-The-Box put together here!
