Starbucks, anyone?

Just received an email from them announcing they are closing their website store, but I can "still" purchase my favorite coffee at my local store. However, my local store has gone from offering many varieties of beans to one. Most of my favorite coffees are single source beans. Fortunately, I found a good source on eBay. The seller (a husband & wife team) sells only coffee and roasts the beans immediately before shipping. They acquire beans from around the world, incl Jamaican Blue mountain. If any here would like the seller's eBay name I will gladly post it.
I presume Starbucks is closing their website because of poor sales. But I wonder if other economic issues are involved. Two or three years ago they built a beautiful brand new store located about 20 miles from my town. It closed within 6 months. In my town the store is limited to brewed coffee and related beverages. Interestingly, there is a small Starbucks concession in a corner of a Harris Teeter grocery located about 40 miles from me. They carry at least a half dozen whole bean varieties.
Coffee, anyone?😋

A Starbucks closing? 20 miles from your town? Were I live in CA, USA there are so many Starbucks that you can sometimes see a second one from the curb in front of the first. In the cities they are spaced about a mile apart. There are more Starbucks than MacDonalds and Jack-In-The-Box put together here!

Starbucks is over rated big time. McDonalds and White Castle have better coffee. In fact, Starbucks has lousy coffee.

I neglected to say that here in the East they may be closing small town locations while keeping those in larger cities open. My town's population is around 33,000. The one that I said closed was in a smaller town of about 7,000. I would expect locations in NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, DC! etc to carry a much larger inventory.

StarSucks lost my vote about two political issues back. Better coffee free at the contractors desk at Lowes. Besides... better to support small businesses. Then post a pic of their coffee on FB for them!

In NYC there are Starbucks in the bathrooms of Starbucks. They just opened one near me in upstate NY. Now that makes 4 with about 8 miles. There are even Starbucks in Target Stores.

Don't need no stikin' Starbucks. My 50 cup percolator does just fine.

It depends a lot on who's making the coffee; when Starbuck's is done right, it tastes superb (though 'way over-priced). I've also had "coffee" from them that should have just been poured straight into the sink; it comes down to how well each (franchise?) is managed, and the quality of the employees. That goes for McDonald's and White Castle, too.

Well, I'm going to chime in because I am uniquely qualified to LOL.
My husband and I own our own coffee house and we roast our own coffee. We are a "franchise" out of MN. Starbucks is NOT a franchise as it is almost totally owned by Starbucks corporate. You will see hotels that technically "own" the Starbucks in their locations but they have been given a special license to sell the products in which they make a small profit from.
Starbucks is so large that they can no longer purchase coffee beans from the best farms (which are very small Arabica farms above ideal heights for premium coffee) therefore they tend to "overroast" their limited lower level beans (have you heard the term "charbucks"?) If they do sell higher quality beans, it is usually in the NW or in higher income level locations such as Japan. Most of Starbucks beans have been roasted, and then shipped out a month or so before they are used in their stores. The best coffee will come from your local roaster, roasted in small batch roasters and will only be about a couple of days to a week old. Now, besides all this, WE would not be here if it weren't for Starbucks so we are grateful they started this whole coffee craze!
Try some coffee from your local roaster (there are a lot more out there than you would think!) and come tell me if that isn't the best cup of coffee you've ever tasted!
P.S. We ship out coffee too so if you are interested in trying some, we would be more than happy to sell and send you some! dunnbros108@dunnbros.com (gratuitous self promotion aside :)

I get my beans roasted while I wait from a Mom and Pop operation in Brisbane, Qld. I no longer use a grinder but now hand plane every bean with a Veritas D60 low angel block plane, well worth the effort!!

Good for you....I think. LOL - that would be "real" dedication to the fine nuances of the bean!

Yes I agree charbucks coffee is way over. over rated, over priced, over roasted. I do dabble in home roasting and there is nothing better than the aroma of a fresh roast being ground and then brewed and even better when you drink it especially when having it with homemade Danish!!

What is working for me these days is buying green beans. Amazon has a couple of sources for South American types, as low as $4/lb. Then, as needed, I roast about a pound at a time in a classic "PopCorn Pumper". Pretty much any other popcorn machine just doesn't hold up.
Two good things happen 1. my coffee is pretty cheap, 2. I am in control of its roast and flavor
