I've spent the last hour looking for info on Abe's of Maine. The Consumer Affairs website has an almost unending litany of consumer complaints about the company; all seem to involve bait-and-switch, misrepresentation and just plain old lying. This company looks like your worst nightmare.

I don't think any Nikon cameras or lenses are American made. I think Nikons are made in Japan and more recently Thailand.

As I stated above, the D810 is more expensive because it's made in Thailand. The D800 is made in Japan.

Why would something be more expensive to manufacture in Thailand than in Japan?

I'm thinking of buying a refurbished Nikon D800 or D810. There's a $200 price difference between the two on Adorama. Can anyone tell me in a nutshell what I'm gettting (or missing) for the $200?

This is not quantitative, but compared to the D810, the D800 feels like a great first effort, and the D810 feels "refined." It is faster, handles better, has group AutoFocus, records more detail, you can shoot one stop higher ISO for comparable noise (ISO 3200 on the D810 looks as good as ISO 1600 on the D800), it is quieter, etc etc etc.

Totally worth the $200.

And I agree. Just hit the send button on my Adorama order for D810. Thanks

In my opinion, newer is usually better. You also have to think about resale value. Try some comparisons.

A big difference is the D800 has a low pass filter and the D810 does not. That is a good thing for the D810. The D810 also has the next generation image processing software. You are getting a lot for the extra $200.00.

Just a quick question about that "made in Japan/Thailand" thing. At one time I read an article that said that, at least at that time, Nikon was still making its "professional-grade" gear in Japan and Thailand was handling gear intended for the amateur market. Does anyone know if that has changed?

Current only the D5 is made in Japan. The Df is also made in Jaoan but I am not sure they are still making them or just sell what they already made.

The Abes of Maine d810 for $2070 is most likely a grey market model hence the cheaper price.

The lack of the optical low-pass filter / anti-aliasing filter and Expeed 4 pushed me to go with the D810. I'm trying to not sell the 810 and go for the D850 when it comes out. The Expeed 5 and autofocus processor that's in the 850 are quite attractive to me particularly after using them in the D500 for wildlife and sports.

For the retail price of a new D850 you are better off keeping your 810 and getting a D500. The purchase price of both the D810 and D500 will still be less than the cost of a new D850. Now you have the best of both worlds - with a D810 and a D500.

It doesn't matter if it is "made" in america versus "distributed" by Nikon America. Quite spltting hairs
