Did the photographer plan that? No. The editor though, that might be a different story!

I don't think the photographer did that on purpose. The photographer was probably using a telephoto lens that had the effect of compressing the scene. You know that the catcher is behind the batter but it appears that he's next to the batter. I wonder how the scene would have looked if the photographer was using a 50mm lens and was somewhat close to the players and umpire.

Thank you Co for responding.

I have no idea, since I'm not into sports. Thank you for responding though.
Actually, the whole point in posting it was to get a laugh.

Shot on purpose; probably not. But picked on purpose? Maybe. Most shooters use burst mode, so there would be a number of shots to choose from. I'm sure the selection was based on the batters expression, but who knows whether the editor thought it was funny that it looked like there was about to be a bat to head collision.

Thank you for responding to my post jcboy3.

I got a laugh out of this photo from our local newspaper and thought I would share it so you all could get a laugh too.
Do you suppose the photographer did this on purpose? Enjoy

You've heard the expression, "Keep your eye on the ball." How about, "Keep your eye on the bat"?

This is a classic example of SUBJECT MERGER.

In the majority of the cases where posing is not an integral part of the photograph it is impossible to plan before shooting. Things are happening in fractions of a second.
No, I do not believe Mr. Judge tried to hurt the police officer.

I don't either, but the photog only had two options--take the shot or not, and in this particular circumstance there would be precious little time to think about composition so take the shot.

There is something odd about the shot. The catcher and the umpire seem focused on something other than the batter It almost looks like a composite. Maybe someone is having fun

Thanks for posting this, so funny and saw it right away. Perfect shot to explain why we need to look at the background. I appreciated your sense of humor, must be like mine.

Of course he did. Those photographers are taking thousands of photos. They probably have 300 or more of each batter. So common sense would tell me that he had other choices and the editor had choices too. They chose that photo and that headline. Remember, those guys always shoot in burst mode and get 12 frames a second so this is an easy shot to get.

Maybe I just have a weird sense of humor.
