Part of the institutional paranoia is the issue of electronics with removable parts that could conceal explosives. The current TSA thinking is over laptops and tablets, but I have heard anecdotally
of DSLR users being subject to extended searches of equipment. The solution could be a non removable lens camera like a Sony RX100M or RX1.

Alternatively, you could get a Pelikan case sizes for your gear, pay the $50 or $100 and check it in as luggage. In that case, document the contents with a photograph and make sure you have a camera rider on your homeowners insurance or a separate policy.

Or we could install an electronic chip into our cameras so we could trace them once they are stolen. TSA should also install security cameras here and abroad to watch baggage handlers, they have already done this and they do know that thefts happen all the time. It's about time too that the untouchable airline industry is held accountable and force them to have to pay for our loses, maybe that would deter thefts, maybe not too.

Okay, when we thought it couldn't become more frustrating, it now has. This morning, Home Land Security Secretary Kelly has announced that he is planning on a ban, both into and out of the US, of all electronics larger than a cell phone. He further said that these plans have been in discussion at most US airports and airlines. (Keep in mind, the last electronic band was announced virtually over night.)

Now, before anyone thinks I'm suggesting that these bands are totally wrong, I want to go on record in believing these bands are in our best safety interest.

That said, I plan to contact our hotel in Stockholm to see if I can ship my Canon DSLR to them, in advance of our trip.

Plan B? Does anyone know of a very very small high resolution dedicated camera that we should be considering? I'm referring to one that could be nearly as small as a cell phone?

I believe the ban is for carry-on only.

With all due respect to all those members who have attacked me, my dialogue has been sole focused on the "possibility" of the Secretary of Homeland Security going to the next step. I prefer to dialogue and to learn of options -before- a new ruling is possibly put into place.

I, all of us possible, have already learned of experiences ... posted in this stream ... of travel in which camera equipment was forbidden. I encourage you to read of the member who posted (within the past day) that he had to purchase new luggage at the airport, so that he could put his camera equipment into the checked luggage for below-cabin storage. Last week it was a member who learned while vacationing in Turkey that the rules changed for travelers from Turkey.

This is all about learning, especially from each others experiences.

Wondering how your DSLR would ship to Stockholm - Container ship? No,air freight. So I gues its okay to endanger air freight crews as long as we dont endanger passengers? Just making a point that I find concern for some lives over others ridiculous, It's all about not getting sued. Maybe they will have a list of approved and banned electronic items next?
Sony makes a few cameras in the RX line that would possibly meet the requirements you mention. Have a great trip.

Why don't you check "Quote Reply" so we know who you are replying to, Thank you. BTW, these aren't rumors at all. We can carry our cameras with us to Europe but may not be able to carry them back except in checked baggage depending on what country we fly back from and it is looking more likely everyday. Welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry, elliot937, but when you state that Secretary of Homeland Security is "planning on a ban," this implies more than a possibility. It would be a lot clearer if the statement were "planning on the possibility of a ban". And while you do state that discussions have been taking place, you did not state "possibility"in your original post. As some have posted, one definitely had to stay on top of the situation which is quite fluid. There might possibly be bans. Your posting, though, definitely gave some readers the impression that the ban is going to take place.

Geesus what a typical jingositic and parochial reply.

By now I am sure you have come to realize that learning is frequently eschewed on this site.

Sooooo Dave, is that how you plan on reaching your scheduled vacation this fall. If so what color and year, I'll be driving and seeing the Western part of the USA in a Ford Explorer. See you there, however if you do fly I can set you up with a Canon 5DMKII and a Canon 7D, just bring your lenses. I hope you will then reciprocate when I come to your part of the country next year to photograph the Fall colors. I guess this is how we will be doing our photography in the future. I'm lucky, I have a good friend in Europe that has two Canon 1DXMKII's.

Well no longer will I be visiting the USA for holidays

That's OK, the UK is already in trouble with all the banks and big businesses leaving for Europe not to mention your country's problem with terrorists too. It might help if you stayed home and spent you vacation money there until this all blows over and it will. We can't wait to come back to your wonderful country but this year we are just traveling by auto here in the United States.

A few yrs ago, a traveler was required to boot up their laptop and if they had a camera, take a picture with it before passing a security checkpoint. Yes, it was a pain to do this and it took a lot of time, but it was a simple way to see if the equipment one had was real or bogus.
I travel extensively for business both in the US and abroad and bring a laptop, a tablet, 2 cellphones and often my D7200 so when I do have some downtime, I can take some great photos of the places I've been to. I do have TSA PreChek and also the GOES card to facilitate checkin but from what I'm reading, this may no longer ease the long line for TSA. Having already lost 1 laptop that had to be checked (luckily the HD was encrypted and the laptop was locked and set to wipe the HD after a number of failed log-ins), I know my company will support me in not allowing my laptop to go into the baggage hold and I feel the same way about my camera gear, tablets, etc.

That's why my wife and I are planning to drive somewhere north. Don't tell John Kelly! Kelly would ban cameras in cars!

The TSA has stated that part of the problem is that passengers are over packing their permitted carry on items to avoid having to pay for an extra bag which makes it more difficult to examine the bags in the security scanning devices. It seems to me the airlines are compounding the problem by demanding an extra fee for this service. There is no free lunch for passengers but the airlines could incorporate the cost of an additional bag for each passenger in the ticket cost. The additional costs would not necessarily be the full costs for an extra bag but an average ticket increase to cover the increase in this checked baggage volume. We have all seen that the airlines are not enforcing their own limit on carry on items with either size, weight or number in many cases. This does not solve the battery issue but it would help with the scanning of carry on luggage and the annoying and discourteous behavior of some of our fellow passengers. The airline industry own rules and guidelines are causing much of this issue so before we see our business and vacation travel turned upside down perhaps a review of the current self inflicted procedures and guidelines should be the first step IMHO. Some may say the airlines would love to charge us more and I'm sure that is the case but if it helps resolve part of this problem then perhaps it is worth the price.
