There's an alternative to regulation, and it's called competition. Oh sure, regulate safety issues, but let competition take care of the rest. Oh, and it's lose, not "loose".
The airlines have been unregulated now for several years. When one airline thinks of a scheme to charge more, they get together and all the airlines chime in to make the charge. Remember when United decided to charge for checked bags? Now all charge with the exception of Southwest. Now, the airlines want to put more rows of seats in the cabin, and of course take away leg room. One airline wants to charge for carry-on space in the overhead bins. One airline has been flying a airliner for 26 flights while the aircraft did not pass a airworthy signoff of the FAA. These guy have been self regulated to long, and have lost the sense of customer safety, basic comfort, and endanger the customers health. The threat of, or by regulation is the only way to make the airlines listen.
I guess you're alright for your equipment to go into the baggage hold, and never see it again, or it comes out in pieces of smashed glass. Or, maybe your laptop is missing, and you find all your bank accounts cleaned out, your house broken into, and your identity stolen. Oh yes, the $5000 charge at Amazon, and all the stuff sent somewhere in Nigeria. Maybe then you'll want to regulate what goes into the cabin, or into baggage.
Oh yes, if you were typing with a cast on each wrist, you may add an "o" or even a "k" or maybe a "d" sometime.

Competition doesn't work any more? Take the blinders off, man, and drop out of your Berkeley business courses. Do you have any idea what a large panel TV would cost if there were no competition? Remember what a long distance phone call used to cost? And how expensive would air travel be without Jet Blue, Southwest, and the like? Competition works and always has.
I was referring to the airline industry and my comment was to stop flying; boycott the airlines and don't fly. I just don't see how competition plays a part here when no one is flying. And you mock me?

Wish I could, but I live on an island in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Haven't found a bus or train that can make it here yet.
