Mary Kate, the country of intended distribution is indicated, by Nikon, with the initial numerals of the serial number.

I purchased a new d810 for $400 less than a refurbished one but was treated with respect and the salesperson was very knowledgeable. Based on my experience, I would highly recommend them. There was no bait and switch

I haven't purchased from Abe's of Maine in ten years, but when I did, I got treated well and fairly, received a US Nikon with a Nikon warranty. I usually buy from Cameta or Adorama, occasionally from B&H and just never think of Abe's (Which is not in Maine)

My purchases from Abe's Of Maine have all been for Canon products -- As a result I have no knowledge as to Nikons relationship with their dealers -- I do offer the following link to what appears as a knowledgeable explanation of what is going on with Canons relationship with their Authorized & Unauthorized dealerships

Does Canon and others have the same gray market policy? If not, that would be a reason for not buying Nikon.

Of course if it is a grey market camera and needs repairs, you may be SOL. Lots of places will sell grey market without making it clear and it appears you get a super deal - until you find that there is no MFG warranty, and in fact, even if you are willing to pay for a repair no Nikon repair facility will touch it or provide parts for it.

Know for sure you have a warranty from Nikon.

As the web page explains, it depends - policy says country of origin, but they appear less stringent.

You pays yer money and you takes your chances I guess ;)

Better yet make damn sure without any assumptions you know exactly what it is your ordering vs what it is your getting out of the brown truck before you give out your credit number -- In my case with both purchases I was fully satisfied

Manufacturers should have a list of approved gray market sellers.

USA by itself does not mean NIkon oR Canon (or other) USA. There are third party warranties sold by US companies other than the originial manufacturer............................BE CAREFUL!!!!!

Not worth wasting time telling you how bad they are. Let the buyer beware. If it's sounds to good to be true it usually is.

I've heard good and bad about Abe's of Maine on this forum. However, I'm still not completely trusting of them. I stay away from 42nd Street Photo, and l can stay away from Abe's of Maine too. To each his own.

Could you answer the question a few have asked...did you purchase a grey market camera, and the first 3 digits are?

If you got a discount on grey market 810 and that is what you expected or understood when you made the purchase, then all is good...
