Now, not knowing what metropolis the OP lives in, I can offer the following clubs as possibly being within wagon train distance of 2 days...

Through The Lens Camera Club - Aberdeen SD
Sioux Falls Camera Club - Sioux Falls SD
Mitchell Camera Club - Mitchell SD
Central South Dakota Photography Club - Pierre SD
Black Hills Photography Club - Rapid City SD

Something to check out...
Since I grew up in Mitchell (worlds only Corn Pala... (show quote)

Visited about 1/2 of those, canceled the others because the whole time we were there it was raining. (this was almost 40 years ago).

Yep - playing outside until dark (be sure to be home for supper). We lived 5 miles out and rode our bikes to town or the lake almost daily- good memories...

Are there ever workshops on editing software. eg. Photoshop. I am not of the "computer literate" generation (I'm old), but I am not stupid and have the perseverance and patients of Job. If I could go somewhere for a 2-3 day workshop, it would be a great jumpstart for me. I have searched on the internet and can't seem to find anything. Am I alone in the endeavor? I live in South Dakota, so I assume anything is a good distance away. Appreciate any help.

First, not sure what you mean by "old" but that word just doesn't apply, if you are still learning. A 2-3 day workshop would be a great idea, but you can easily begin by downloading Affinity Photo and following their excellent Youtube video tutorials. (My friend took his new girlfriend on an Alaska Cruise when he was 92--girl friend was younger, about 80.)

Thanks---you are so right. I love where I live, even though opportunities and resources are not located around the corner or down the street. On-line and DVD,s are the answers for me, and I have gotten many choices from all the posts. I am so grateful to all of you.

Hi I'm new to this site & thought I may be able to offer some insight on the training.

Everyone has posted really good suggestions, yet sometimes it's difficult just to decide which one to use.
The free ones are always wel free and also many a excellent sources as well.

My suggestion is to also look at your local library and what they have available online. As a taxpayer you have free access to many of their
online business databases or other online sources that can cost hundreds of dollars to access.

And at our library there is also beginers photoshop & lightroom classes available through Lynda.com for free.

God luck and have fun....
Keith

I used Google - 3 searches:
camera clubs in south dakota
photo clubs in south dakota
photography clubs in south dakota

IF you decide to take some on-line courses -

Some UHH resources:
Post-Processing Tutorials and How-to-do-it Index
Free Processing software

Light Room training
Lightroom Training / Info

Good luck in your pursuits...

I agree. Lynda has an endless list of Photoshop, Lightroom and many other subjects-from beginner to advanced.. (When I got my first I phone they even had a very complete tutorial on the basics and features of the phone)!!. They supply videos about 4 or so minutes each and they come with a text. You can replay the videos as many times as you like. I love it but there is a monthly subscription. Some libraries provide free subscription for library members.

KelbyOne.com and Lynda.com are subscription services that are loaded with excellent full courses one every level. I have subscribed to both for the past 4 years and I don't see it ending anytime soon.

If you run a Mac or a Linux machine there is excellent software with lots of tutorials.. My preference is Darktable for a RAW editor. Like Adobe's Lightroom, it offers a full tool set for RAW development and some tools that just are not available in Photoshop/Lightroom. Check out Darktable.org for the software and for tutorials I recommend info from Harry Durgin. He's on Youtube and has developed a tutorial site at http://weeklyedit.com/ .. On the weekly edit site are videos from doing basic work in Darktable to more advanced edits. Some of what he covers will also apply to Photoshop/Lightroom but you'll quickly find a lot of the more powerful tools are easier to use than the hoops you have to jump though in Adobe's products. Of course, this is all Opensource and free. Some will say you get what you pay for. I beg to differ in this case. If anyone reading this is a die-hard Adobe fan, please don't take exception. There is a paradigm to each RAW developer.

Thank you. I would never have thought of that source. I just got off a website that was offered as an option. The cost was 790.00. Too steep for me, but was interesting to find the site and all that it offered. I will go to the library (we actually do have one of those in town) and check that out tomorrow. Great idea. Thanks

Udemy.com has a lot of offerings on any number of subjects, including all of the variants of Photoshop. The courses I bought were at bargain rates ($10, when the list was $200)--and there are free ones, too. If you have two computers or dual screens, you can have you program running while you watch the video instruction. Good luck.
