Are there ever workshops on editing software. eg. Photoshop. I am not of the "computer literate" generation (I'm old), but I am not stupid and have the perseverance and patients of Job. If I could go somewhere for a 2-3 day workshop, it would be a great jumpstart for me. I have searched on the internet and can't seem to find anything. Am I alone in the endeavor? I live in South Dakota, so I assume anything is a good distance away. Appreciate any help.
Try Youtube. Tons of videos.
You might also look at the offerings from CreativeLive. They tend to offer extended intro-type classes on Photoshop and Lightroom and would be significantly cheaper than a workshop.

Some colleges/schools run photoshop classes as a vocational training. Local camera club may well help you.
Editing isn't so much difficult it is just Vast. It seems difficult because you have so many options of what you can do - and many ways of achieving the same thing. Most people use very little regularly.
Simply google search the one thing you want to do. look at written tutorials rather than video...you can read as fast or slow as you need. If it helps print out the tutorial and follow 'in real editing' line by line.
When you have that 'off pat' then ask a new question and repeat.
Bookmark sites you feel useful - not everyone learns in the same way.
Search like 'how to work with curves in pse' you will get hundreds of hits and just need to find one that you 'click' with.
have fun

Try amazon books ... you'll find used at great prices, and you will always have it to refer to.
Read the reviews or sometimes they let you look inside the book at the contents.

How far to a Community/Jr College/2 year school, they often have computer graphics and even photography classes. Some adult schools/night schools also.
Do you already have Photoshop and or Lightroom? There are others out there.
You might look at Photo Shop Elements, it is sort of PS lite combined with some of the features of LR.
Assuming you already have PS and/or LR Adobe's site has an education section, don't remember what it is called right now.
Several online courses are available*, not to mention free on YouTube (range from awful to OK to good).
Adorama and B&H photo stores have online education videos but they mostly concern the taking of pictures.
If you google "online classes for..." photoshop or lightroom you will get a lot of choices to look into.
I would suggest you start with Lightroom, it does at least 90% of what most people need to do.
If you do not already have PS or LR then I suggest you look into Corel's photography software - Paint Shop Pro and After Shot Pro (their answer to LightRoom), right now the PSP Ultimate with Aftershot is $79.99 and Corel has excellent tutorials in their education section.
I used the Corel Draw Suite ($499 perpetual license) for years to produce classroom visuals and it too has a photo editing feature. I then transitioned to PSP because it is much cheaper and I no longer needed to produce classroom graphics after I retired. About 3 years ago I learned Lightroom which led me to Photoshop since they tie in together so well. But I still have my last edition of PSP as a fall back, besides it has a couple of things I really like.

I like the local Photo Club as a resource. There are many with really skilled photographers who love to share what they know. And it would be a nice, longer term relationship than a course. Not to mention the camaraderie, field trips and other cool stuff that most clubs do.

If you don't mind paying $150 you can get this at CreativeLive.com
I have several of these videos. You can follow them and watch them free if you catch them live, or you can buy the videos. Some cost less than that. If you watch something live, and like it, then they usually sell them for a limited time at a discount. Like one of the videos I bought from them I watched live, and then I liked it so much that I paid $99 for it but a day after the class ended the price went up to $149. Look for Photoshop or Lightroom classes by Ben Willmore (he's the best), Lesa Snider (I read one of her books on PSE9), Dave Cross, Jack Davis or Jared Platt. Once you buy one, you might like to do some bartering with other people that might let you borrow one of their videos if you let them borrow yours.

A quick google search for photography classes in SD brought up links from Sioux Falls to Rapid City - you can check out each school on line to see if they offer what you are looking for and if you can take the specific courses as stand alone classes.
Also, check out photo clubs in your area - some of them offer training classes in various aspects of digital photography...
Wow. Thank you all. Forgive me, but I lied. I said I am not stupid, but I see that I spelled patience as PATIENTS. So I may have to re- think that statement. I am going to chalk that up to working 40 years in the medical field.
You all offered some very good information. I will be on it. I signed up for a photography workshop last fall at a community college 60 miles away. They cancelled it for a lack of interest. I would have to travel 85 to 250 miles to join a photography club, and I actually wouldn't mind traveling that distance if I could find one.
I can't thank you all enough for the options you have listed. I love this forum and appreciate the fact that you folks take time to offer advice from your experiences. Maren
Thank you, I will do that.
KelbyOne.com and Lynda.com are subscription services that are loaded with excellent full courses one every level. I have subscribed to both for the past 4 years and I don't see it ending anytime soon.
