I have heard that Nikon lenses can be used on any of the Nikon cameras, but I'd like your opinions. I have the opportunity to buy a Nikon F6 film camera, and so I was wondering if the lenses I now use on my Nikon D7100 will also work on the F6.Thanks for your help.

Depends on the lenses in question, but most should. I'd not trust the lens chart on the Nikonians website as it has errors that have never been fixed even though I & others have pointed them out to them over the years. The chart on Rockwell's site & on Nikon's own website are more accurate.

Download the instruction manual and check “Lens Compatibility,” pages 36-42.

Check the charts as it can get confusing. I believe as a general rule any lens with a mechanical aperture ring should work just fine on that camera. Newer lenses without it you will need to check out.

Just remember that DX lenses will not yield a full frame image on the film. Also check to be sure the F6 has a built-in motor for focus for lenses that have no focusing motor. The F5 had that, but not sure about the F6 as I never owned, or even touched, one. As others have mentioned, the Nikon web site may be helpful, but calling Nikon Tech Support about specific lenses might be better. I think I remember what film was! Best of luck!

Yes, no and maybe.

Nikon has a long, rich and complex history of lens incompatibilities and limitations.

Search online for more details. Believe about half of it. The difficulty is determining which half.

Here's a good place to start: http://www.photoshopessentials.com/essentials/16-bit/

Note that the latest AF-P lenses are not yet listed and be sure to read all the relevant footnotes. Some lenses can only be used in limited ways or may require modification of the camera or lens to work.

Nikon fanboy Ken Rockwell adores the F6 and states unequivocally "F6 is completely compatible with every Nikon lens made since 1977...". But, unfortunately it's not. Some lenses can only be used in certain exposure modes, some have metering limitations and there are even a few post-1977 lenses that are completely unusable (early AF lenses). Pre-1977 lenses may need modification.

It's very likely that any modern FX lenses you've got for use with your D7100 will work fine. But DX lenses won't. At the very least, they will vignette heavily.

Yes, the F6 has an in-body focus drive motor, so it can autofocus lenses without the motor (such as AF-D).

Many lenses for the D7100 are DX lenses. If use on the F6 would cause vignetting. The F6 can not control the aperture of the newest lenses (the E type with electronic diaphram) .

The D7100 can also utilize FX lenses. I have mostly older FX lenses that I use on my D7100. It all depends on what he has or wants.... My few DX lenses are wide angle due to the crop factor of the camera...
