I use SDHC (slot 1, front) as my card of use, CF is set for overflow. In the future, I will get the next 8xx with XQD in both, or (prefer) SDHC as 2nd.

I currently have a Nikon D7000 and a D750 and have been thinking about adding the 810. On my current cameras I use the second card slot for backup. I would like to know if the SD or the CF is the #1 card slot? Can the second card slot be set up as back up like my current cameras?

I have been hoping that Nikon would come out with a D8?? that would have duel SD cards but GAS is getting me.

I may have other questions as this thread expands. Thank you for your help.

For the CF slot I bought a card that takes two micro SD cards. You can put quite a bit of storage in it if you want. I only ise it for back up jpegs.

You can then put the micro SDs into SD holders to download.

That's a great idea!! How many gigs total do you have with two?

no one can ever explain to me why there are CF cards; there must be some advantage, but, even salesmen shrug their shoulders; I'm betting one of you guys can explain it

It was the original series of card, no advantage. Everything gets updated, some day the CF will be like the 8 track.

CF cards have been used since digital cameras have been made. Over the years, they have become able to store more and more and work faster and faster. Most pros own a pile of those cards. It seems that XQD is the new & faster card and it's design has some physical advantages. Prior to obtaining the D810 I owned no XDHC cards, but I now have a few. It seems that XQD is the CF of the future, but who really knows. Electronics advance at a rapid pace. Best of luck.

You can designate either card as the primary.

Yes you can choose which is primary and how you want each card to function.

I hope that those who said erase their memory cards meant to say "Format." Erasing files from your cards frequently, will, according to many forums and manufacturers, shorten their life span.

Never format on your computer but always in the camera using the memory cards.

You can set up either as primary and the other as backup; or one RAW, one jpeg. The choices are in the set up menu.

If the CF card is on its way out, why would Nikon use it in the D810? I never had a CF card before, and still don't really know how it is different from an SD card (besides being larger in physical size). But I like having a card in each slot, so purchased one.

The 810 allows you the option of configuring the camera the way you want. Either card can be first,

CF cards are faster at moving data.

sure enough - just did a quick look on Amazon; the first two CF cards listed, 32 gb, and 64 gb, wrote at 160
