You can set up either as primary and the other as backup; or one RAW, one jpeg. The choices are in the set up menu.

Thank you! I no longer use a second card for Jpeg. I use it for back up in case the first card is corrupt. Plus I won't have to use double the disc space storing both RAW and Jpeg. I will process then convert the ones I want for Jpeg and leave the rest undone. Thank you for your time to answer my questions.

If the CF card is on its way out, why would Nikon use it in the D810? I never had a CF card before, and still don't really know how it is different from an SD card (besides being larger in physical size). But I like having a card in each slot, so purchased one.

I see you also have a D7000 which uses the 2 SD cards which are smaller than the CF. The 7000's are older than the 810 and I thought they would have made the upgrade to the 2 SD slots when they produced the 810. I was surprised when I found out the 810 had a CF card. If they upgrade to D8?? and they change to the dual SD slots than I will be upset with myself for buying an 810 not holding out. I had thought we would see an 810 upgrade this past fall but that wasn't the case so will it be this year?????

The 810 allows you the option of configuring the camera the way you want. Either card can be first,

Thank you!!!

CF cards are faster at moving data.

You would think that if CF were the better option they would have 2 slots for it. Thank you for contributing. More to think about.

D8?, I think a D6 will arrive first!

I had expected the D8?? this past fall and was surprised when it didn't arrive. Maybe this year. Of course I will probably wait 6 months to a year to let them work out the bugs although I waited to buy my D750 and had to send it in for the recall.

Newer models of cameras keep coming out. There is always something newer than what you already have! After purchasing the D7000 (best of its class at the time), I saw the D7100 and the D7200 arrive. But no matter how much better they might be, I was still learning to use the one I had.

No matter when you buy, there will always be something "better" coming out. I cannot see waiting and waiting, because soon enough there will be another "better" version coming out! I had the D800 on my "wish list" for quite a while, but then the D810 showed up and replaced it on my list. Eventually I was ready to buy a full-frame camera, and when prices were reduced around the Christmas holidays, I took the leap. Very happy with the camera. And I won't care about the "new and improved" version because the changes will not be drastic enough to excite me and cause me to foolishly long for it!

My philosophy of purchasing gear is to get the most out of what you have before moving on. There comes a point when you have grown into the camera you have, and discover there are things you want to do that you cannot quite accomplish with this camera. This is when to buy another one that promises to fulfill your needs. Same thing for lenses!
